May 1. — Americas oldest filly race, the 2,400 Kentucky Oaks, will have its 84th running here Friday on the eve of Saturdays historic Kentucky Derby. This event which enjoyed its inaugural in 1875, opening year at the Downs, saw A. B. Lewis and Co.s Vinaigrette prove the first victress under 97 pounds while covering the then distance of iys miles in 2:39%. Thirteen sophomore misses have been named for tomorrows renewal of the Oaks and heading the field is the Hasty House Farm entry of Hasty Doll and Melody Mine. Eads Las Olas, C. V. Whitneys Bug Brush, Llangollen Farms Galarullah, T. and L. Andersons Red Baby, Roger W. Wilsons Black Letters,- Short Brook Farms Craftiness, Maine Chance Farms Lady Fantasy. Effort at Keeneland Good Hasty Doll made her seasonal bow just last week at Keeneland in a 6 furlongs test conducted under allowance conditions and finished exceptionally strong in this sprint by being but a half length shy of Miss Profit who was timed of a 1:12£. The going was muddy that afternoon at Lexington and probably didnt help the daughter of Roman — Legendra a bit as it was not particularly suited to her front-running style. The filly concluded her juvenile cam- Continued on Page Nine HASTY DOLL Thirteen Sophomore Fillies See Action In 2,400 Churchill Kentucky Oaks Hasty Doll, Melody Mine to * Form Favored Coupling; Stay Smoochie, Bug-Brush Threats Continued from. A long rest freshened her nicely as evidenced by her recent effort at Keeneland and just earlier this -week she went through an impressive time_trial here at the Downs which should have left her honed to a fine edge. Ismael Yalenzuela has been sighed by the Reubens for tomorrows important test. Stay Smoochie comes up to the event with top credentials. The peculiarly named daughter of Alquest— Paigle accounted for Saturdays Oaks Prep in the easiest fashion while getting under the line of finish nearly two lengths before Bug Brush while covering the 6 furlongs in 1:11%. This effort of the Prjce filly was excellent as she was forced to" overcome interference at the. top of the front straightaway but still came on to win with authority and in a manner suggesting that she should have little trouble in handling this more exacting distance. Stay Smoochie won Hialeahs Jasmine Stakes late in January when she caught a muddy track and stepped the 6-furlong distance in 1:12 £. The filly -was lucky in the draw for post position tomorrow as -she received the number one spot and for this engagement will have the services of Walter "Mousey" Blum. Bug Brush, a lightly-raced daughter of Nasrullah— Bonnie Beryl, picked up her maiden victory early in the Keeneland. session while stepping 6 furlongs over a sloppy strip in 1:11%. The Whitney miss followed this effort up with a smashing second to Ramadel in the Ashland Stakes where she finished but a length shy with the three-quarters time being 1:10. She came back in the Oaks Prep last Saturday and again had to settle for runner-up honors. Bug Brush was closing gamely in the Prep, which suggests that the added distance of the stake is exactly what is needed for her to pick up a stakes victory and trainer Syl Veitch to further enhance her chances obtained the services of Eddie Arcaro for tomorrows race. , Down through the years such great fillies as Modesty, Souffle. Rush, Audience, Bronzewing, Waterblossom, S u n b o n n e t, Viva America, Princess Doreen,31ack Maria, Rose of Sharon, Alcibiades, -Two Bob, Miss Dogwood, Canina, Wistful. How, Real Delight, Bubbley and Princess Turia won the event during their sophomore season and went on to even greater heights. Regrets dam Modesty, used the Oaks as a stepping stone to the American Derby as she came off this grueling test to travel to Chicago and account for the inaugural edition of that 1 1-2 miles test in 1884. Audience gained added fame following her victory in the 1904 edition of the Oaks by foaling Whisk Broom II. in later years. Modern, day renewals found Warren Wrights Wistful establishing arlew7 tradi- tion following her victory in the 1949 Oaks by going on to take down the Coaching Club American Oaks and Pimlico Oaks and thus become the first winner of the Triple Crown for three-year-old fillies. It was but three years later that Mrs. Warren Wrights Real Delight duplicated the feat for the same Lexington nursery .and became, the second winner of thedlstafi Tripledrbwrl.
