Consistent Laird Star Starts at Fonner Today McFarland Gelding Tops Field In Featured Island Elks Purse. By DEAN WHXIAMS FONNER PARK, Grand Island, Nebraska, May 1.— J. E. McFarlands Laird Star has been entered in the featured Grand Island Elks Purse to be run at 5 fur-, longs Friday. The highly consistent allowance and handicap performer, who was voted the 1957 Colorado-bred of the year, won three, races and was seven times second last season, racing against some of the, top sprinters in the Omaha -Denver area. The McFarland gelding competed at Fonner Park during the 1956 and 57 seasons. The son of True Star has started six times here "in the two years, winning twice. Laird Star equalled the 6Vs furlongs track record held by Mephistopheles in his last start at Fonner Park last year. The small chestnut gelding Avon by six lengths in 1:18%. He won so easily there was little doubt that, he could have lowered the track standard. Brandel and Moss* Whos Joy will be another leading contender for top honors in the Elks Purse. The brown son of Kopar turned in a top effort his first out to finish second to Ed Luthers Kay Ellen. In his next- appearance under silks here, he was a short price favorite and finished unplaced. The poor showing was due to the "off" condition of the racing strip. The allowance affair attracted nine entries. The eight that drew into the feature are: Laird Star, Whos Joy, Atascosa, Star-la, Mavrcdaphne, Extra Dream, Karen Ar-thene, and Jr. Moran. Peachment was drawn on the "also eligible," and will not get a chance to run unless there should be a scratch in the race. Mavrodaphne and Extra Dream have won at Fonner Park during the 1958 season. s -■ ?
