► ; ■ ■ French Fillies Are Expected To Win 1,000 Guineas Today Bella- Paola, Amante Rated 1 Far Above Their Nine Foes In 8,400 English Classic By VERNON MORGAN Reuters Sports Editor NEWMARKET, England, May 1.— One of the smallest fields In many years contests the 1,000 Guineas, first classic for fillies, here Friday. Eleven are scheduled to seek the first prize of nearly 8,400. The race is being run oyer the same course and distance of 1 mile as the event for colts on Wednesday, and is expected to be something of a walkover for the French fillies. The French filly Bella Paola, trained by Francois Mathet, will be even a stronger favorite than Bald Eagle was in the colt division on Wednesday, in which he failed to finish in the money. The beautiful bay by the German sire, Ticino, and dam. Rhea, is regarded as one of the best of her sex in France for many years. She recently won cleverly over a mile and is thought to . be a cut above her rivals Friday. Bella Paolas chief rival is expected to be another French challenger. Amante, owned by the Aly Khan -and trained by Alec Head. After two victories last season. Amante was defeated in a 7-furlong event at Lcngchamp last month by the colt Bel Canto. The daughter of Tehran is greatly fancied and after being held at 10 to 1 last week is now half those odds. Amante will be ridden by jockey Jean Massard, who is- no stranger to Newmarket. Frances champion jockey. Serge Boullenger, has the mount on Bella Paola. Persian Wheel Queens Hopeful The British fillies hardly seem of the same caliber. Probably the best of them • is the Queens Persian Wheel, who could | give the royal family a spectacular dou-" ble if she emulates the performance of Pall Mall in the 2,000 Guineas Wednesday. | Many thought she was a shade unlucky to lose to the French filly. Princess Lora, last | week at Epsom Downs in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes. Princess Lora is a stable-mate of Amante, thus giving trainer Head a strong hand in Fridays classic. Persian Wheel, unlike, the royal colt Pall Mall, who is in Capt. Cecil Boyd-Roch-forts stable, is trained by Noel Mirless. She will be ridden by Lester Piggott. Alpine Bloom, owned by Lord Milford. was pretty useful last year, but she fell from grace when beaten by Nicaria at Newbury 10 days ago in a 7-furlong race. Being by Chammossaire, however, the extra distance Friday should be all in her favor. Nicaria, who will be in Fridays field, should also stay well, for she is by Nearco, . out of a Foxjiunter mare. The only filly that may have a chance ■ to turn back the French challengers is Mother Goose, who is French-bred. This daughter of Escamillo is owned by Emile Littler. Harry Carr, who rode Bald Eagle in the 2,000 Guineas, vwill be in the saddle. [The form of Mother Goose is difficult to assess, because she has not beaten much, but may be a better filly than many think and she could surprise. Another large crowd is expected on the heath Friday for the 1,000 Guineas renewal. The present fine weather with a chance of seeing Bella Paola run and .the possibility of another royal victory in certainly enticing. The field and riders follow: Horse. Rider.
