Titien II. Registers in Meadow Brook French-Bred Jumps Cleanly at Belmont Best Hurdler of 1950 Beats Lone Fisherman in Initial Steeplechase Engagement BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 14. — A. Edward Masters Titien n., a French horse who first schooled over fences a few days ago, won the thirty-sixth running of the Meadow Brook Steeplechase today, jumping cleanly ail the way and reaching-the end of about two and a half miles a length and a half before F. Ambrose Clarks favored Lone Fisherman. Kent Millers Elkridge was six lengths I farther back in third place, a dozen lengths before Margaret S. Kirpatricks Pretender.. Mrs. Michael C. Walshs Gift of Gold completed the field after leading for more than a mile. The Meadow Brook lost some of its interest when Mrs. Ogden Phipps Oedipus and Lpwry Watkins Tourist -List were scratched because of the soft track. Titien DT. was ridden, as usual, by the French jockey, Albert Foot, paid and earned ,750 in his first attempt over a chase course. The son of Tornado Tour-billon had won his last two starts on the hurdle course, breaking his own record for about a mile and three-quarters when he ran and jumped the distance in 3:14 two weeks ago with 158 pounds. He had a moderate 140 today and was timed in 4:56 over a slow, soggy track. Titien n. has also won on the flat, on both grass and skinned courses. The smallest crowd of the New York season, 14,491, viewed the sport in dismal, rainy weather. Leads for Eight Fences "Dooly" Adams sent Gift of Gold to the front at the start of the Meadow Book, closely followed by ~ Lone Fisherman and Elkridge, while Pretender and Titien DI. were a couple of lengths farther back, with Albert Foot swinging on the French horse who was fighting for his head. Gift of Gold led for eight fences, never more than a length before Lone Fisherman, who led Elkridge by a little wider margin. After clearing the water jump, Lone Fisherman took command. Elridge reached for the next fence, taking it on an angle and Pat Smith-wick eased liim back for a breather, while Foot gave Titien II. his head and he quickly moved into third place. The ultimate winner was jumping more cleanly with every fence, appearing to gain confidence. Gift of Gold stopped as they turned into the backstretch the second time and Titien n. moved- up to challenge Lone Fisherman, appearing to outjump his larger and more experienced rival. At the same time, Elkr ridge began to come on again, though Smithwick didnt begin to urge him seriously until he had cleared the 14th fence at the far turn. Elkridge Finishes Third Lone Fisherman continued to lead around the final turn, but Titien n. clearly dominated the favorite and took the final fence a head in front, then drew away under pressure in the run for the wire. Foot eased the winner two strides before the finish, which cut the final margin somewhat. Lone Fisherman fought on gamely, while Elkridge finished strongly, gaining half a dozen lengths on Lone Fisherman from the final fence to the finish. Elkridge earned ,000 for being third for the third time in as many starts this year, bringing his record earnings to 27,-555 in 116 starts, of which he has won 31. Elkridge was making his first start on a wet track in several seasons, and though again third, was six lengths closer to Lone Fisherman at the finish than in last weeks Corinthian chase. Maine Chance Farms Graphic found the sloppy track to his liking in the Elmont Purse, best of the flat races, and stood a long hand drive under Bennie Green to score by a half length over Edwin Holtons Moseid, who headed him for a stride or two in the stretch. Mrs. Widener Wich-felds Dictionary, who was slightly favored over Graphic, was five lengths away in third place, two and a half lengths before San-ford Stud Farms Little Falls, who quit as usual. Graphic paid .70 and stepped the six furlongs in 1:11%.
