FRISKY MATRON AUSPICIOUSLY Consistent Western Performer Takes Abington Purse at Detroit; Largest Week-Day Crowd of Meeting In Attendance Mutuel Handle- Best Since Opening Day. . DETROIT, Mich., May 29 Frisky Matron, consistent western performer, made her middle west debut in auspicious fashion in winning the Abington PiTse, first of the two six-furlong features offered at Detroit here this afternoon. The five-year-old daughter of Bistouri, which races under the colors of C. W. Shaw, Jr., took command soon after the start, to be two lengths before Jake Freedmans Garden Message at the end. A length and a half separated the latter and Mrs. A. M. Creechs Cant Remember at the close. With fair weather prevailing, the largest week-day crowd of the meeting was on hand for the attractive program, and the mutuel handle waa one of the best since the opening. There was little delay at the start of the Abington, with Garden Message and Cant Remember the first under way. Before leaving the chute for the main course, Frisky Matron was in command and, with the exception of being roused when Cant Remember offered a mild bid approaching the stretch, the winner was never put to pressure. After forcing" the pace from the start, Cant Remember tired in the last stages, and it was no task for Garden Message to overhaul him in the final stages. During the openings three-eighths, The Pelican held third place, but he gave way rapidly thereafter, and Regardless and Glyn-son were never factors. Eight maiden two-year-olds met at five furlongs for the introductory race and it resulted in a defeat for one of the most heavily supported choices of the meeting, when the Elmtree Stables Peloria, a 7 to 10 choice, was a head back of G. L. Strykers Glowing Coal at the end. Elanac, making her first start and well supported, was third, five lengths in the wake of Peloria and three lengths before Tragedian, which, held fourth position the greater part of the dash. Jesting Queen registered her first victory of the year and provided the biggest surprise of the meeting, completing a "Daily Double" that returned ,332.60 to three holders of tickets when she got up to beat Dunsprite by a nose at the end of the three-quarters second race. Third went to Le Bruyere, which tired after forcing the pace to the final stages. The Lone Star Stables Dorothy B. was a popular winner of the Woodward Purse, for three-year-olds, when she reached the finish of the six furlongs third race slightly more than a length before Hope Loring, which Continued on fortieth page. Two-year-olds again met at five furlongs for the fourth number, and it was another victory for the talent when Be Big, an E. R. Bradley cast-off, carried the J. M. Brooks colors td a driving success. Hi-Well was second, only u, short rieck back of the winner and two lengths, before San Rafael, which .held ibird place from the start.
