Here and There on the Turf Latonia Derby Is Open Eace Unless Omaha Accepts Issue Dozen May Start in Belmont Oaks New Jersey Drive Nears Success - - -4 -That ,000 extra Col. Matt Winn dangles before the winner of the Kentucky Derby if he captures the Latonia Derby appears an easy pick-up for Omaha, but many doubts are entertained that William Woodward will have his good three-year-old sent out from Aqueduct for the mile and a quarter event, whose, renewal is set for Saturday. Conditions of the race provide for a purse of 5,000 and ,000 more to the winner if he happens to have the Kentucky Derby to his credit also. Omaha would be practically a sure thing to take this years renewal of the historic affair if he accepted the issue, but without him the contest appears a wide-open affair and a surprise may he forthcoming as was the case last year when the filly Fiji was victorious. Although Roman Soldier has done much hard campaigning during the last five months, the Latonia Derby may be too much for his connections to resist., The game-going son of Cohort and Miamba, by Light Brigade, would be the better for a short vacation as he is on the small side to begin with and plainly showed the marks of much wear and tear when he came out for the II- Continued on thirty-eighth page.. However, he displayed his usual courageous effort in that engagement but was unfortunate enough to meet. up with a capable and fresh colt in Sun Portland, to which he was giving "eight pounds. The Sachsenmaier and Reuter colorbearer probably will rule favorite at Latonia if he ia a starter. Otherwise the honor may go to the Greentree Stables Gillie, which has been given a special prep for the Latonia Derby by trainer William Brennan at Belmont Park. Gillie failed to get anything in the With- ers last Saturday, but since that mile affair he has been sent a mile and a quarter in 2:06 which should be sufficient for him to be ready for his Latonia Derby engagement. The bay son of Victorian and My Tide, by My Play, has not been called upon to do much since he captured the Santa Anita Derby and Brennan but recently has brought him back for hard duty. He holds a decision over Whiskolo in the West and on this basis of comparison he rates highly in the Latonia Derby calculations. Whiskolo finished just hack of Roman Soldier in the Texas and Kentucky Derbys, but didnt do so well In the Illinois Derby. He is regarded as a certain starter . In Saturdays race. Blackbirder and McCarthy- are other colts that may be expected to contest the Latonia Derby. At least a half dozen starters may be expected in the Coaching Club American Oaks, the only remaining spring or summer special for three-year-old fillies possessing at least a decent value. The Alabama Stakes in: August is the only other valuable affair for members of this division remaining on the calendar. E. R. Bradley is expected to furnish the favorite for the mile and three furlongs test -with his entryof Black Helen ;and Bloodroot, which William Hurley is sending from Washington Park where on Saturday they finished first and second in a fast mile. Later each went ever the full distance of the Oaks under steady restraint and cannot have any excuse about not being in good condition for the race. After the Belmont jOaks, they will be ready to tackle the colts, especially Black Helen which has avoided them since her Florida Derby victory. At or near the scene of action, the trainers , of Judy OGrady, Esposa, Mock Turtle, Pal-ma and Good Gamble have been grooming them for the effort of turning back the Bradley pair. Judy OGrady appears the most solid of the quintet over the long route of the Oaks but any of the others might surprise. Good Gamble looked every bit a stayer in her victorious performance : in the Acorn Stakes, although she frequently j in the past has failed to stick out six furlongs. Mock Turtle is another filly that has been labeled a sprinter, while Esposa and Palma apparently are made of stouter stuff. The field would be complete with the addition of Nellie Flag, but the Calumet Farms clever miss is not an eligible and may have to vait until the Alabama running to prove whether she is the best three-year-old filly in the country. After being huffeted around for the past year or so and having a State Racing Commission with nothing to do, New Jersey appears headed, .for a revival of the sport under pari-mutuel or rather totalizator betting. If plans of constructing a track just across the Hudson from New York City are followed through, the legislature of the Empire State may be called upon to go ahead with its resolution for putting the pari-mutuel measure on the ballot for a final approval of the voters. This resolution was laid away at Albany during the recent winter after having been sent on its way a year previously. A track operating with the bookmakers cannot be expected to operate profitably in competition with one having mutuels in the vicinity of New York, but wise heads practically are agreed that the metropolitan sport is the backbone of Americas racing and its best hope for a long life Is with the slates and not the electric bulbs. 4
