HOMEWOOD, 111., May 29 A dozen of the bes,t handicap horses in the West are named to start in the first .running of the Blue and Gray Memorial, ,000 added, at one mile and a furlong, which features the Decoration Day program at Washington Park, here tomorrow. With the track heavy in mud today from the steady rain of yesterday arid more showers expected tonight, the course is expected to be in heavy or slow Condition for the running of tomorrows card, but the management expects one of the largest crowds of the entire Chicago season because of the heavy demand for advance reservations. The Brentwood Stables six-year-old Late Date, fresh from her impressivevictory in the Inaugural Handicap at Latonia last week, shapes -up as the likely favorite. Watch; Him. beaten in his "first Washington Park start earlier in the week, is expected to show considerable improvement over that effort when he. parades to the post in the silks of Mrs. John D. Hertz, and ranks as probable second choice. Dust Girl, already a winner at the meeting and in the sharpest condition of her career, is coupled with the veteran Ever-gold as the Shandon Farm entry, which represents the Nash Brothers of Chicago, and horsemen regard the pair as extremely dangerous. The Three Ds Stock Farms Quatre Bras II., successful in his only local start this season, is likewise considered one of the real contenders. The enigma of the field is Gusto, the six-year-old that has returned this season to the track where he won the American Derby in 1932 to give him his claim to the three-year-old championship. Under a new owner, L. T. Whitehill, Gusto has been atteriipting a comeback this year. In his only start here he was beaten, but the distance that afternoon, one mile, was likely too short to per-r mit him to show his best ef.hrt, and the consensus is that the mile and a furlong of the Blue and Gray Memorial will be much better suited to him. The largest throng of the Chicago season is being prepared for by Washington Parks new management. Annually, Memorial Day attracts one of the three largest throngs of Chicago racing, and because racegoers, have, been so pleased with the numerous improvements that have been made this year in, the Homewood racing plant, more of therii are expected to turn out than ever before. Because of the rearrangement of the plant, however,, there should be little crowding.
