GILLIE FOR LATONIA DERBY En Route From Belmont Park to Start in Saturdays Big Race. .. . Greentree Stable Star May Rule Favorite Despite Presence of Whiskolo, Roman Soldier and Others LATONIA, Ky., May 29; Gillie, outstanding of the eastern candidates which vill contest the 5,000 Latonia Derby to be run Saturday, June 1, has been loaded in his pompous private car, which was due to roll out of New York Wednesday morning. That the son of Victorian will travel de luxe from New York cannot be contradicated, for all of Mrs. Payne Whitneys performers have the most elaborate conveyances when they travel. Quarters for the Greentree Stables racers are all ready and a great reception awaits the winner of the Santa Anita Derby. Notwithstanding the announcement that Mrs. Ethel Mars Whiskolo and E. R. Bradleys Boxthorn, and Sachsenmaier and Reu--ters Roman Soldier are being prepared for the classic, it is safe to say that Gillie will rule favorite, but not as short as that of Roman Soldier, which went to the post in the Illinois Derby at thand prohibitive odds of one to three. While Roman Soldier failed in his Illinois engagement, his performance was a sterling one and no reflecting condemnation can be held against the son of Cohort when weight concessions he was making to his other rivals are considered. Then the time for the race was far above the average, only one-fifth of a second slower than the track record for the Aurora course. Black Helen, which-will "probably repre sent E. R. Bradley, was sent one mile and three-eighths in company with Bloodroot at Washington Park Tuesday morning. The two fillies reeled off the distance in 2:30, which, while not fast, should fit them for their best. Of course, Bloodroot is not an eligible for the impending stakej but Box-thorn is, and in the event the dean of Idle Hour should change his plans about .sending Black Helen, there could be no better substitution than Boxthorn, which was the medium of a heavy play in the Kentucky Derby winter book. The latter, son of Blue Larkspur and Doreid, is highly regarded by E. R. Bradley, and it is a known fact that nothing, would please Bradley more than to add another Latonia Derby to the imposing list of Derbys which have been annexed by Bradley three-year-olds in previous years. The dark horse in the race iS: D. D. Mid-kiffs Tearout. This colt should not be held too lightly, for his effort in the Illinois Derby was a smashing one, and with the Latonia fixture an eighth of a mile farther, his chances are enhanced considerably. Chanceview, which trained impressively for the Kentucky Derby and, under the direction of former jockey Oliphant, is reported fit and ready to fill his Saturday engagement. There is little more for the candidates to do to be ready for the trying test, and the only work of consequence was turned in by Morrison and Keating McCarthy, which was sent one mile and one-eighth over the slightly dulled Latonia track Wednesday morning. Jockey Mack Garner, who is to handle him in his Derby engagement, was astride the son of Star Master. The, horse went the quarter in :24, half in :50, three-quarters in 1:17, mile in 1:44, and galloped out the mile and one-eighth in 1:58, handily. Blackbirder is ready. This assertion is borne out by the smart workout he had Monday when he negotiated the Derby course of one mile and one-quarter in 2:05. The Hainesworth racer indulged in a light gallop Wednesday, which is sufficient to keep him on edge until time, for the big Whiskolo will undoubtedly remain at Washington- Park for his final trial, for which he was sent half a mile Tuesday morning, splashing through the mud in :49. This will serve as a "prep" for a more exacting work Thursday.
