CRETE, 111., Oct.. 9. One of the largest fields of the entire meeting was indicated today for the Marquette Handicap, Lincoln Fields closing stake feature Saturday, despite the probability of unfavorable track conditions. The Marquette, fifth of the ,500 added money events of the local meeting, brings to a close the twenty-eight day period of activity at the Crete course and also brings to an end Chicagos long major racing season. Heavy rains drenched the track today but the prospect for muddy or heavy going tomorrow failed to keep trainers from naming their thoroughbreds overnight and a total of fourteen of the thirty-two eligibles were entered in the handicap. MUDDY GOING. Muddy going will make lbs Marquette even more of a wide open race than it has been previously. Run over a mile and an eighth route, longest stake distance of the meeting, the Marquette figures to be the most keenly contested feature and prospects are the favorite will be as much as 3 to 1 in the wagering. Overnight the post of favoritism rested among F. P. Letelliers Billbo, the Rosebale Stable entry of Silk Mask and Bandalore, and Frank Abbates Prince Torch. Banish fear also may attract support as may Lady Montrose. The presence in the saddle of the leading rider of the Chicago season, Basil James, assures the Tranquillity. Farms Songmaker of support. A fine getaway card has been arranged by racing secretary William H. Shelley to support the Marquette Handicap. Secondary feature is the Au Revoir Handicap, a grade "C" event at one mile. Three of those named for the stake, Baltimore Boy, Banish Fear and Cardarrone, also have been entered in the Au Revoir. With an off track for the final day of the meeting, the Crete racing barely managed to have a majority of fast courses during the twenty-eight days of racing. On fifteen occasions the going was called fast. On thirteen others, it varied from good to sloppy.
