LOWELL CLAIMING HANDICAP Provides Thrilling Finish With Marmara Winner by Small Margin. Ladfield Loses Close Decision After Camera Reveals Success of Marmara In Closing Strides. SALEM, N. H., Oct 9. A favorite was beaten in a camera decision in the six furlongs Lowell Claiming Handicap, which featured the days sport at Rockingham Park. The favorite was Mrs. C. Cranes Ladfield, which appeared to have lasted to win by a head, but the film showed Leo J. Marks Marmara a narrow margin in front at the end of the journey. Oak Trees Calaveras was third, two lengths back of the runner-up. Great Haste, the early pacemaker, finished fourth in the event. Bit of Sorrow and Rip Van Winkle were the only other starters. Marmara was probably best as the race was run, even though it did not appear that he got up in time. He was far back in the early stages and had to circle around horses in making his bid. He was coming fastest of all at the end of the journey. Great Haste set the early pace but was never far in front of Ladfield. The latter moved into the lead on the turn and as Great Haste dropped back he was bumped. That took whatever chance was left out of him and he was never in the contention again. Ladfield came into the stretch on top, but Marmara was charging after him and as they flashed past the eighth post they were head-and-head. At the sixteenth post they were still battling neck-and-ncck, and in the final seventy yards Ladfield hung on tenaciously to a heads advantage. It appeared he held it.to the end, but the camera showed otherwise. Calaveras was well lip for the entire journey, hung slightly at the sixteenth post, but came again to take the third award easily over the tiring Great Haste. They finished in 1:113, excellent time over the track. It was a warm, sunny day and the track was at its best. GOOD DAME BY LENGTH. Oaktree Stables Good Dame drove to victory by a length in the first event, with the up and coming lightweight, Johnny Barba, who scored a double yesterday, rating her on the front end from start to finish to beat Mrs. Floyd Wests Bedight. The latter, usually a front runner, could not keep up with Good Dame in the early stages and never could get to the Morvich filly, though he closed some ground in the final sixteenth, under hard urging from Malley. He was much the best for the place, taking that award by two and a half lengths over Arthur Hullcoats Proteus. The latter, off fast and in the contention throughout, had only a head to spare over High Finance for the show. Wally Leischman rode the third winner of his career and put up a good .exhibition of horsemanship as he piloted Owen La Con-ches Donald Duck home a neck winner in j the second, at six furlongs. The lad had to go to a hard drive in the final sixteenth to I whip Mrs. Matt Colfords Royal Shoot The latter had the lead at the eighth post and appeared a sure winner, but- Donald Duck came on again under Leischmans stout urging to earn the decision. Mrs. Ed Haugh-tons Askaris and Mrs. Ray Pollards Cherry Can dead-heated for the show, three lengths back of the ruhner-up. Cherry Can and Askaris made the early pace, but as they approached the far turn Leischman drove Donald Duck to the lead. Royal Shoot moved at the same time and assumed command as they straightened out. At the sixteenth post it looked as if the filly would i draw off, but Donald Duck made a second charge under the gad and won the race. Cherry Can and Askaris could riot match the stretch speed of the leading pair, but waged a bitter duel in the final eighth and finished so close together that the camera could not separate them. ALL THE WAY. Allan Tiptons El Bandido rushed to the front immediately after the start and stayed in the lead all the way to win the third drawing away by two and a half lengths. Mrs. E. S. Walkers Dirigible, which moved to the contention on the turn, finished second in the Indian file finish, three lengths in advance of Mrs. F. Walkers Busby. Laddie Stone was fourth. Another limit field went to the post. Far Cry, a traveling horse from the Med-way Stable, which has been shipped around the country about as much as any horse in training this season, dropped in at Rocking-hame to score a surprise victory this afternoon in the six furlongs fourth event. He staged a cyclonic charge in the stretch under an energetic ride from Charley Stevenson, to whip Mrs. Haughton and Mrs. Wests Fharatime, the favorite, by a nose. Malley evidently thought he had the .race won on the latter and did not awaken to the danger of the horse charging up on the outside until it was too late. Far Cry nailed Pharatime right on the wire. E. A. McManns Sanctity finished third, half a length back of the runner-up. Count Dean was fourth. Sandy Beach and Penrill were the only other starters. S. An-clscn arrived with the two-year-old Landscape which he is training for J. J. Fitzgerald. Slim Jane and Royal Cunning are the latest additions to starter Bob Frends schooling list
