AUSTRALIAN STARTING GATE Two-Year-Olds to Be Educated to 1 This Device at Hialeah and Probably Tropical Park. t NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 9. The Australian starting gate, or Gray Barrier, which Joseph E. Widner plans to introduce in races for two-year-olds at Hialeah Park this winter, today was praised by William V. Dwyer, 1 managing director of Tropical Park, which j precedes the Hialeah meeting in Miami. "Mr. Widener is to be complimented upon i introducing another novel innovation to the i American turf," said Dwyer after inspecting the model of the Australian barrier set up at Belmont Park. "As he plans to begin cduca- 1 tion of two-year-olds with it at Hialeah dur- ing the winter I can assure him that Trop- j ical Park will be eager to assist in launching ; the barrier he is sponsoring." i Tropical Pai-ks first meeting this minter runs for two weeks In January, a period in : which the new juvenile crop will begin its i education and it is possible that Dwyer will ask Widener to permit use of the Australian i barrier during these two weeks for Tropl- cals two-year-old racers. Thus the confusion bound to result in the schooling of the juvenile colony at two different types of : barriers would be eliminated. i The Australian gate, which was installed : for demonstration purposes at Belmont Park : this fall, will be shipped to Florida soon, ac- i cording to Widener. It is a device set up on a special structure including an inclined runway for raising the barrier proper. The latter is composed of six heavy strands, mak- . ing it impossible for a horse to break through and forcing the horses to break uniformly from a dead-still stance. I1
