PHOENIX HOTEL HANDICAP KEENELAND OFFERING Sprint Race to Head Opening Day Card Next Saturday Hollyrood Assigned Top Weight of 122 Pounds Count Morse Most Dangerous Rival License Committee Prepares Commission Report LEXINGTON, Ky., April 13. Hal Price Headleys Hollyrood, an intended starter, heads the list of weights for the Phoenix Handicap, which were announced today by Charles J. McLennan, racing secretary and handicapper of the Keeneland Association. The Phoenix, a dash of six furlongs, -with ,500 added, features the opening of the eleven-day meeting at the attractive new course here on Saturday. A field of at least ten is expected for the Phoenix, with some of the horses having been campaigned during the winter. Hollyrood, winner of the Chicago and Detroit Derbys last season, was wintered here, but has trained in excellent fashion for this engagement. Second in the weights with 120 pounds is Calumet Farms Count Morse, which raced in top company at Hialeah Park this winter. The son of Reigh Count has been freshened up since his arrival from the South, but has been whipped back into shape for the opening attraction. McLennan holds Mrs. L. J. Hickmans Dusty Dawn and C. V. Whitneys Roustabout in equal regard at 118 pounds, and both are due to start, as is Tranquillity Farms Capt. Cal with 117 pounds. WEIGHT ALLOTMENT. Top weight among the three-year-olds and expected to start, judging by his workouts, is J. W. Parrishs Dellor, which finished third in the Widener Challenge Cup. He must take up 108 pounds, two more than Manhasset Stables White Tie, and five more than his stablemate, Proph. Other likely starters include Deliberator, Wha Hae, Bow to Me, Marica, Pelerine, Preeminent, Airy Going, Sir Jim James and Kermay. The weights follow: Horse. Wt. Horse. Wt. Outstanding among the workouts of Kentucky Derby hopefuls at Keeneland today was the six furlongs effort of Dellor. Accompanied by Proph, they went the distance in l:15Vs. with the latter colt breezing as the son of Rolled Stocking finished in handy fashion. They were timed the opening quarter in :23 and the half mile In :47. Both colts likely will start in the Phoenix Handicap Saturday. The Manhasset Stables White Tie, which only recently arrived from Red Bank, N. J was worked five furlongs in 1:014 by trainer John Gaver. Whitney farm Black Look and Flying Cross, Derby candidates, went four furlongs in :48 in a manner very satisfactory to trainer Thomas J. Healy. Other trials of note at Keeneland were Hollyrood, six furlongs in 1:15; Black Gift, mile in 1:41, and Boston Pal, mile in 1:40. All are handicap prospects. The license committee, composed of Charles P. Price, C. Bruce Head, Sam H. McMeekin, Thomas C. Bradley and Sam C. Nuckols, has prepared its report for the Kentucky State Racing Commission, which will pass on it at its meeting here Friday night Nuckols, who is serving as a steward at Arlington Downs, was the only absentee at the license committee meeting here yesterday. Mortimer Shaw, director of the pari-mu-tuel department, will hold roll call Thursday morning, after which the employees will man their positions and test the electric totalizator. John Morrlssey, starter at the Fair Grounds, has returned from New Orleans to spend some time at home.
