TEXAS DERBY TRIAL GALLOPS Dead Calm Regains Prestige by Long Morning Workout. Runs One Mile and an Eighth in 1:51 In Preparation for Saturdays Rich. Special. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 13. For Saturdays renewal of the 5,000 added Texas Derby, Dead Calm, which finished a close second to Grey Count in the Louisiana Derby, ran the nine furlongs of the Derby route over a fast track at Arlington Downs this morning in 1:54. Directed by jockey Haas, who has been engaged to ride him, the son of Grandace began his task at the sixteenth post and, working well in hand, ran the quarter in :25, the half mile in :49, the three-quarters in 1:14, and the mile in 1:40. Trainer J. R. Gregory was highly elated with the work, and predicted his horse was the one to beat for the prize money and the beautiful trophy. The selection of Haas to ride the gelding eliminated Woolford Farms Rifted Clouds from the probable field. The daughter of Insco was under colors twice during the Epsom Downs meeting, but she showed none of the form that carried her to victory In the Washington Juvenile Stakes, and trainer Ben Jones has decided to let her await the fixtures for horses of her sex to be offered during the Kentucky and Illinois seasons. REAPING REWARD OPENER. Reaping Reward and Military, two of the strongest of the seven eligibles In the Milky Way Farms barn, breezed three-eighths in :37 as an "opener" for a more exacting test tomorrow. Track conditions will decide whether Military will fill his engagement. In the event the threatening weather lhat prevailed yesterday and this morning brings rain, the son of St Germans will be a starter, while a fast track must prevail for Mars Shield. As the race draws closer to its decision, several well known handicappers have made ; a probable future book line on the Derby, with Reaping Reward a strong pre-post favorite at odds of 6 to 5. Most of them state, however, that in the event the son of Sickle starts, he probably will be an odds-on choice. : Heelfly is considered the second choice at odds of 4 to 1, and Military is held at 5 to 1. Robert L., which triumphed over the Waggoner representative and Mars Shield, is held at 6 to 1, and Mars Shield is figured at 8 to 1. Case Ace lost most of his admirers when he was trounced in the Blue Bonnet Handicap, and the handicappers line shows him to be a 15 to 1 hazard, and the same figures are placed against Eastport. Although Dead Calm was figured a 15 to 1 chance last night, his brilliant work caused several of the handicappers to revise their figures, and nearly all of them held him at 10 to 1 this morning.
