OVER THE TOP SCORES Preakness Stakes Candidate Shows Speed at Havre de Grace. Failure of Tedious Blow to Public in Mayfield Purse Wagner and Peters Star. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 13. Over the Top, useful three-year-old in the Glen Riddle Farms stable, came into his three-year-old form in auspicious fashion and became one of the leading candidates for the Preakness Stakes for which he is eligible when he accounted for the Mayfield Purse, an allowance affair for three-year-olds that was the fourth and best offering at Havre de Grace today. A winner of only one race in five starts as a two-year-old. Over the Top showed the results of careful conditioning after a long rest during the winter months and under a well judged ride by De Camillas came from behind to triumph over Alfred G. Vander-bilts Tedious which raced during the cold months at Santa Anita. These two setting all of the pace in the small field of five, came to the close of the abbreviated race separated by a neck, while beaten two lengths for the place Siam captured third for the Bomar Stable when he beat Abaddon, one length as Francesco trailed far back to complete the field. Tedious was installed a strong choice for the race and his failure was a sad blow to the public and in a measure his defeat was attributed to L. Knapp, who rode the chestnut son of Teddy. GOOD EARLY SPEED. Tedious had the speed to go into immediate command from a good start, and he went along so smoothly in the early stages that he appeared to be destined for brackets. With Over the Top in chase, these two went along clear of Siam and Francesco, and Abaddon brought up the rear. Through the run down the far side of the track, Tedious and Over the Top went along separated by a length and a half, and with the others unable to threaten seriously, they came into the front stretch with the same gap between them. Coming through the stretch, Knapp began to look back from one side to the other, and as Over the Top challenged in the last furlong the Vanderbilt colt wilted under his rider, and it was in the final sixteenth that Over the Top drove past to win in the slow time of 1:44. The temperature was ascending and a good crowd turned out for the second day of the sport. Despite the fact that the card was mostly given over to the cheaper grade Continued on twenty-third page. OVER THETOP SCORES Continued from first nage. performers, much interest was shown all during the day. Nine maiden home-bred two-year-olds met for supremacy in the four furlongs test that began the entertainment, and it saw Rehearsal from the Mrs. R. H. Heighe stable racing coupled with Actress graduating when she led all the way to register in a drive. Stepping into the leading position directly with the start and guided the nearest way to the finish the daughter of Theatrical under the skilfull handling of M. Peters reached the close one length in advance of J. W. Y. Martins Battle Jack, while Legal Light the choice of the talent earned a close decision over Actress for third. Rehearsal had enough speed to move into a lead of two lengths in the opening furlong then dominated under the pressure of her rider to cover the distance in :48. In saving the place Battle Jack, the runner-up at all times, was eight lengths before the disappointing favorite while Actress had a clear margin over the others. Older sprinters met In the second race that was contested over the three-quarters distance and it brought a surprise with the running when Liberty Lane Stables Sage Girl triumphed in a thrilling finish to score by three parts of a length. Virnock, from the Mrs. A. J. Abel barn, was second and Masked Gal was third in the field of nine. LONG DELAY AT POST. Jockey J. Wagner had the mount on the successful Liberty Lane Stable miss and he had the filly away smartly from her outside position to follow abreast Addis Ababa sent out by C. Parke in the opening stages to establish the pace. Surging into the lead midway of the turn Sage Girl stuck to her task willingly for the rest of the trip and in a long bitter argument through the late stages swept across the line with almost a length as her final margin. Masked Gal was beaten a head for the place as Sylvia G., led the others that included the disappointing Top Tax. A delay of almost fifteen minutes occurred before the race got under way due to Virnock throwing jockey W, Duffy into the fence while parading to the chute. A substitute rider, K. McCombs was en- gaged when it was thought that Duffy suffered a fracture of his left arm. Jockey Joe Wagner marked up his second winning score of the afternoon when he drove K. E. Hitts Care For, to an easy victory over five other three-year-olds that met in the third that was also oyer six furlongs. Overlooked in the speculation, and returning one of the biggest dividends of the meeting, the daughter of Ed Crump, after leading all the way, was past the line five Ijngths before Linas Son, another at liberal odds, while the favored Bomar starter Frisco Kid had to be content with fourth when Mattapony took third for Howard Bruce. It was the first outing of the season for the Hitt colorbearer and with Wagner in the saddle she had enough speed to dominate the race all the way for a hollow and unexpected score. Pretty Busy, racing for Miss L. C. White, scored her second victory of the Maryland season when she was a front-running and easy winner of the mile and seventy yards sixth race. Leading throughout, the daughter of Busy American and Pendleton was not extended as she coasted across the finish line five easy lengths before her nearest rival, Top High. Third In the field of eleven ,250 top and bottom platers went to Justa Play, which was only a head in the wake of Top High. The- winner was ridden by apprentice Michael Sarno, who was substituting lor the injured W. Duffy.
