WINN RETURNS TO LOUISVILLE i Churchill Downs Head Pleased With Progress in Improvements. Paint Being, Freely Applied to All Buildings at Derby Track Construct New Barns. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 13. Col. Matt J. Winn, president of Churchill Downs, has re turned from a business trip to Chicago and New York and once more has assumed active charge of alterations and improvements to, the expansive local course and preparations for the opening of the spring meeting here of nineteen days on May 1 and the sixty-third running of the Kentucky Derby a week later. Colonel Winn was pleased with tho progress made in his absence and said that all work would be completed in ample time for the inauguration of what promises to ba the biggest spring season Churchill Downs has enjoyed in many years. Besides increasing the number of boxes and the installation of additional betting pavillions, lounges, bars and restaurants, the grounds themselves are being renovated and beautified. A rock garden Is being constructed around the stewards stand in the infield where considerable other, land scaping is under way and gardeners are busy In the clubhouse enclosure putting in flower beds and other greenery. PAINT FREELY APPLIED. Paint is being applied freely to all build ings on the grounds and racegoers will bo impressed with the pristine cleanliness and beauty of the plant on opening day. The management also Is not overlooking the stabling quarters for many improvements also are under way on the far side of the track. Several new barns have been constructed and old ones put in repair. Colonel Winn has spared no expense to Improve the picturesque Downs and he plans to remain here now to supervise completion of the work now in progress. With the possible exception of short trips to Chicago, ths veteran head of the Derby track will be here until the close of the local season on May 22. Although racing secretary William H. Shelley will not be here until late, his. office will be opened some time next week for acceptance of registrations and applications. Registration blanks already are being distributed among horsemen, as are condition books, and much of the work of filing these applications will be over when Shelley arrives shortly before the opening of the meeting. STALLS AT PREMIUM. In spite of the large, number of stalls, both at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park, facilities foe horses again are at a premium, a condition that augurs well for the success of the meeting. Churchill Downs spring meetings always have plenty of horses of aTl classes, and this spring will be no exception. In keeping with this assortment of thorough breds, secretary Shelley has arranged a program that has attracted wide commendation.1 The tracks are in excellent condition thanks to the combined efforts of track superintendent Tom Young and the weather- man, and the . training periods are among the busiest ever seen at the two local courses.
