THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 CALSUN, chestnut colt, by Gallant Fox Sunstroke;, property of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm. He js bred to stay and possesses good speed, which was demonstrated Monday when he worked an impressive mile in -1:40. He has been backed down- from 60 to 20-1 in the future book on the Derby. By NORRIS ROYDEN i.. ......... --...........---... One of the strongest plays made on a candidate for the Kentucky Derby has been shown for Galsun, a husky chestnut colt by Gallant Fox Sunstroke, by Campfire, in Warren Wrights Calumet Farm stable. It has been forthcoming from persons close to the stable, an indication that Galsun is held in very high regard by his connections, and if he is to be considered a likely winner of the Derby, he also may: be liked as a good prospect for the three-year-old championship. Galsun raced only four times, but he apparently did not come to hand as he went into retirement after the running of the Hopeful, although as sound as could be. He may be backward in his development this spring and not show much until later in the summer, but he is expected to improve from his two- to hi3 three-year-old form as did Omaha and Granville, other illustrious sons of Gallant Fox. The big well-made chestnut made his debut at Arlington Park on August 1, running fifth in a five and one-half furlongs sprint taken by Bottle Cap. He was beaten five lengths, never being able to reach the leaders. His second start was in the Saratoga Special, In which he did not care for the slow condition of the track, being beaten by a dozen lengths by Forty Winks, although finishing third. He was last of the small field turning into the stretch, passing two horses, although at a disadvantage in the going. The Calumet colt graduated in a six furlongs race for maidens six days later, taking the lead approaching the stretch turn and holding in capable style through the straightaway to score by a length and a half over Night Bud, with Casinghead third, and Brooklyn, fourth. The latter was making his first start The time of 1:12 was the second fastest of the Saratoga meeting by a two-year-old, being exceeded one-fifth by Billionaire a few days later. A chance was taken on Galsun in the Hopeful, for which, the going was sloppy, but he demonstrated as he had in the Special that a soft track was against him and was well beaten, although finishing fifth. Galsun has unusually large feet, which ordinarily are not found on mud runners. From a breeding standpoint, Galsun comes by his three-year-old promise naturally. Little need be added about his sire. Gallant Fox, one of the best racehorses this country ever has seen and a proven success at the stud in begetting stayers of class, such as Omaha and Granville, both champions of their three-year-old seasons. Sunstroke, dam of Galsun, Is a daughter of Campfire, which produced many capable stayers. She herself is a half-sister to Gallant Sir which, like Gallant Fox, was by Sir Gallahad HI., and he won several important events over a distance of ground. The second dam, Sun Spot, was by Omar Khayyam, more staying blood, from Sunstep, she a half-sister to Waygood, winner of the Irish Derby, and also the dam of Galaday. With such breeding, looking every inch a racehorse and having shown quality in his few starts as a two-year-old, although nature apparently endowed him to reach his peak later in life, there seems ho wonder that he is held in such high esteem by his" stable. He has done all asked of him so far in his preparation. Galsun Is the writers preference for the Derby and three-year-old championship. Ajax T Flying Fox Amie Rondeau..
