MILKY WAY FARM ENTRY PROBABLE DERBY CHOICE IMPRESSIVE WORKOUTS Case Ace and Mars Shield Demonstrate Their Condition. Illinois and Texas Derby Winners Work One Mile and an Eighth Easily in 1:52. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 16. Two Milky Way Farm candidates for the American Derby, to be revived at Washington Park Saturday for a 5,000 added purse, indicated their fitness for that mile and a quarter fixture when they turned in sparkling trials over a fast track at the Homewood course this morning. They are Case Ace and the filly Mars Shield, the former winner of the Illinois Derby at Aurora and the latter victor in the Texas Derby at Arlington Downs. Case Ace and Mars Shield, working in company, traveled a mile and a furlong and were timed the distance in 1:52. Stepping along at a likely pace but going handily all the way, the two Derby representatives of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars of Chicago ran the first quarter of their trial in :24, the half-mile in :48, three-quarters in 1:13, and the mile in 1:38. PAST RECORDS GOOD. Their performances were among the most impressive trials shown here this spring, and if their past performances are not enough, these "preps" may establish them favorites for the feature, which is the high light of the Washington Park season. Two other intended starters in the Derby, Mrs. William H. Fursts Over the Top and Emerson F. Woodwards Eagle Pass, also were seen in long trials this morning. Over the Top breezed a mile and an eighth in company with Gerald in 2:01, while Eagle Pass, attended for seven furlongs by Sir Emerson, went a handy mile and a quarter in 2:09. Over the Top was strongly restrained in his work until the final eighth, where he was asked for more speed to run the furlong in :12. With Gerald he was timed for the first quarter in :27, half mile in :54, three-quarters in 1:21, and mile in 1:49. EAGLE PASS HOLDS FORM. Eagle Pass, which finished second to the ill-fated Reaping Reward in the Latonia Derby last Saturday, indicated he is holding his good form by the manner in which he disported himself this morning. The son of Night Flyer went his first quarter mile in :25, half in :50, three-quarters in 1:15, and the mile in 1:42. Sir Emerson went the seven furlongs with the Valdina Derby hope in 1:29. Besides this quartet, other three-year-olds scheduled to start in the 5,000 race this week-end are J. W. Parrishs Dellor, King ."Sanehs Dawn Play, another crack filly; Continued on thirty-ninth page. MILKY WAY FARM ENTRY PROBABLE DERBY CHOICE Continued from first page. Edward W. Duffys GreyGold, Shandon Farms Burning Star, Bomar Stables Yellow Tulip, Tranquillity Farms Teddy Green, and Raoul Walshs Sunset Trail II. Dellor, Dawn Play and Grey Gold were expected to reach Washington Park tomorrow, coming from other racing points, while the fate of several other Derby candidates was to be determined in a race this afternoon. With eleven starters, the American Derby will have a gross value of 1,675, with the net to the winner 5,900, making it one of the richest events of the Chicago season. EXPECT BIG CROWD. One of the largest crowds of the season will undoubtedly favor the pair of Derby winners carrying the silks of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars of River Forest, 111. Case Ace, which won the Illinois Derby in his most recent start, and the filly Mars Shield, which triumphed in the Texas Derby and Kentucky Oaks earlier in the year, are expected to attract the main support in the mutuel machines, with the other filly,- Dawn Play, and the stout finisher, Eagle Pass, coming in for a great deal of consideration as well. Re- garded as outsiders in the American Derby, Over the Top ranks as a distinct threat, while Dellor moves u. if solt track conditions K prevail.
