WOLVERINE HANDICAP WORKS Eligibles Turn in Brilliant Trials for Detroit Race. Azucar. Demonstrates Readiness for Another ! Clash With Whopper by Splendid i Trial Over Distance. DETROIT, Mich., June 16. That Saturdays renewal-of the ,000 added Wolverine Handicap promises to be one of the best races of the Detroit spring season was shown this morning when no less than ten eligibles turned in splendid trials over a fast track; word that Cardarrone would be sent here to fill his engagement, and the arrival of Mrs. Emil Denemarks War Emblem and Corinto from Chicago this morning. Azucar demonstrated that he is at the top of his form and ready to give Whopper a stiffer battle than he did when he was a close second to him in the Colonel Alger Memorial Handicap by turning a mile in 1:42 and galloping out a mile and a furlong in 1:56. The Fred Alger, Jr., star stepped along at an even pace, covering the quarter in :26, the half mile in :51 and three-quarters in 1:16. Polar Flight, his stablemate, went a handy mile in 1:46. He was accompanied by Hosemaid. His fractions were :25, :51 and 1:18. PAIR WORK MILE: Carl S. and Professor Paul were timed a mile in 1:43. Their fractions were :25, :51 and 1:16. Mrs. Tom Stevensons Tempestuous breezed a mile in 1:47, and H. C. Hatchs Uppermost, another dominion star, went the same distance in 1:47, handily. First Entry was breezing at the end of eight furlongs in 1:46, and Stocks and Exhibit were limited to seven furlongs drills. Exhibit was breezing in 1:29, and Stocks was clocked in seven-eighths in 1:33, handily. Sir Jim James was timed six furlongs in 1:15, handily. With so much interest being taken in the Wolverine Handicap, it now appears that the Frontier Handicap, for which the Wolverine will serve as a preparation, will be as brilliant as in the days when Boniface, Exterminator, Old Rosebud, The Porter and other turf immortals raced for the fame and gold at the Devonshire track in Windsor.
