CONGRESSMAN VICTOR Runs Fastest Five Furlongs of Current Latonia Meeting. Gallops Route in :59 to Win Poke-away Farm Purse Parkview Racer Odds-On Favorite. LATONIA, Ky., June 16. Sharing headline honors with the Gibson Hotel Handicap, which occupied sixth position on this afternoons program, at Latonia, was the Poke-away Farm Purse, a sprint of five furlongs that engaged seven candidates for the Clip-setta Stakes and Cincinnati Trophy and provided a contest that was rejplete with thrills. The Parkview Stables Congressman, an early favorite for the Cincinnati Trophy, and victor in his only previous start here, took on added lustre as a formidable eligible by accounting for the major portion of the purse. In doing so, he recorded the fastest time for five furlongs during the meeting, as the bay son of Rhinock negotiated the five panels in :59, just four-fifths of a second slower than the track record. J. W. Parrishs Knee Deep was second, a head behind the winner, after waging a courageous battle. The Enza Vita Farms Play Dis was a rapidly closing third. NEVER CONTENDERS. Those following the first trio across the finish mark, were Noticing, Don Moss, Strut and Cloud o Dust in the order named. At no stage of the contest were any of this group serious contenders. For a brief period it appeared as if Knee Deep would prove capable of overhauling Congressman, as they reached midway of the stretch, but Willie Hanka deemed it advisable at this point to draw his whip and a few lashes on his hide saw Congressman continue with renewed vigor to gain the verdict. , By far the largest week-day attendance of the current season installed Congressman an odds-bn favorite and the success of the Parkview Stables performer was a popular one. Favored by her feathery impost of ninety-nine pounds and a superb ride . by apprentice W. L. Johnson, Mrs. R. J. Murphys Little Nymph surprised with a handy win in the Gibson Hotel Handicap, defeating King Ranchs Synonym by a length and a half. Proph, from the J. W. Parrish stable, was third in the six furlongs affair, in which there were seven contestants. The speculatively inclined patrons centered their support on the field in the second race and Judge Blake, one of the trio grouped in this band in the six furlongs dash, came down on the front end, defeating Noma F. by a neck in a driving finish. Third money was gathered in by Brentwood Lad. SCHLENKERS RECORD. Apprentice Alexander Schlenker kept his perfect record at Latonia intact when he guided Mrs. A. L. Taylors Gold Thorn to a handy score in the third, another sprint affair. It was the youngsters second mount of the- meeting and a like number of triumphs. Captain Henry was second and Cherokee Red next in order as the six furlongs were completed. Displaying a highly creditable performance, Our Willie, came from behind to prove an easy winner" of the fourth race," which brought together a better grade of sprinters than in the previous offerings and enabled Jesse Spencer to account for his initial purse of the season. Geo. Gable was second, two lengths behind the victor, and Board Trade captured show honors.
