CONTINUE ROUGH RIDING Grey Gold Scores in Detroit Feature Cornay Thrown. Horses Caught in Jam in Final Eighth Billy Mole and Sirgay in Dead Heat for Second. DETROIT, Mich., June 16. Rough riding, which prevailed in the secondary race, marred the running of the Birmingham Handicap, sixth contest offered at the Detroit course this afternoon. It went to E. W. Duffys Grey Gold, American Derby eligible, with Dixianas Crows Flight second, and Biscayne Blue, like the leaders, a locally owned three-year-old. Grey Gold had slightly more than a length to spare at the end of six furlongs but Crows Flight, which began from outside the stalls, and Biscayne Blue, which caused interference, were so closely lapped that the picture was needed to separate them. Guymons rough tactics caused Warren Cornay to be tossed from Mary "Vito approaching the final furlong, but luckily the lad escaped injury. Gene Wagers and Crows Flight were also caught in a jam and while Crows Flight overcame it, Gene Wagers was knocked out of contention. CARRIES TOP WEIGHT. Grey Gold carried the top impost of 114 pounds and ran the distance in 1:13. Biscayne Blue was an 8 to 5 choice. With cloudy weather prevailing, only a fair-sized crowd was present for the well-balanced mid-week program. The track was classified as fast. The supporting race was a six furlongs. sprint for better grade platers and resulted in one of the many thrilling finishes of the afternoon when Long Run Stables Judge Kavanagh, which was permitted to race very wide through the stretch, beat Mrs. C. C. Winters Odd Blue by half a length. Bunny Martin was third and Bill Donoghue, the favorite and top weight under 116 pounds, fourth. WINNER BEGINS FAST. The winner began fastest of all, but Frank Mauro placed him in hand and Odd Blue drove up on the outside to take the lead nearing the final half mile. After rounding the far bend Judge Kavanagh ran into the lead and he attained a good advantage during the run through the stretch. Judge Kavanagh carried 109 pounds and ran the distance in 1:12. He was the second choice. Mere Frolic won his second straight race and his third of the year when he was an extremely popular winner of the first race and the first of the meeting for juveniles, at five and one-half furlongs. Local Boy was second, a length back of the winner, which, carried R. R. Greenlees colors, and four lengths before Aim High, which finished third. Continued on thirty-eighth page. CONTINUE ROUGH RIDING Continued from first nage.J Miss Johnston chalked up another victory for the public when she turned back Free Spirit, Miss Joker and eight other lowly platers at the end of a mile and seventy yards in the second race.
