JOE D.j breaking very slowly, settled in his stride quickly, worked his way forward between horses nearing the home stretch, took a slight lead in the final eighth and outstayed NO ENDING. The latter, timidly ridden, was taken up sharply at the turn out of the back stretch while on the inside, lost a great deal of ground after falling back, then finished gamely while coming wide at the finish. BALANCE UP closed gamely after being outpaced .early. SOU FENG was rushed off her feet in the first half mile, then tired. SHRED was badly ridden all the way. AUREATE, rated back of. the leaders until leaving, the . back stretch, was. carried wide by RONAIR at the stretch turn, rallied to a vigorous drive and was up in the closing strides. RONAIR raced dose to the , leaders, challenged stoutly entering the stretch, and fought willingly to the finish. CHIEF HOLLIS, under urging, gained a short lead early, saved ground all the way but tired in the final test. LADY VA VA, slower than usual to settle into her stride, closed with a belated rush. DIXIE BEE tired after a half mile. OLD DOMINION was unable to reach contention. HASTY HANNA forced a swift pace until reaching the stretch, then quit badly. INA DEAR followed within striking distance of the leaders, stole through on the inside near the stretch, continued evenly and was up inside the final sixteenth when the leaders tired. HYPH was steadied in front, responded well when challenged but was tiring badly and could not withstand the winner. DILWIN drew up almost even with HYPH near the stretch but hung when the real test came. BLACK GIRL was held safe throughout. SUMAC raced below, her best form and was never a, factor. SPICY, hustled into a contending position near the first turn, worked her way up on the outsdie until reaching the front, responded to punishment in the last drive and barely lasted long enough to withstand TRAITRESS. The latter, shuffled back near the first turn, was rushed off her feet to enter a forward position, then hung after coming up on almost even terms with the winner in the last sixteenth. RED" ARIL was rated nicely, swung to the outside and finished well. BRIEF outran her field early, saved ground throughout but was unable to stay when asked. SHEBANG raced well. The latter went prominently under strong handling and finished courageously when the final test came. PIRATE LASS, squeezed back at the start, went to the outside for racing room and closed gamely. PETLINE was well up for five-eighths, then tired. LUCKY JEAN was taken up at the start and was poorly ridden thereafter and can do better with more intelligent handling. TIEMPO began quickly, ran wide at the first turn to lose the lead, was kept on the outside thereafter, but outstayed MAKEIT in the closing stages after losing more ground entering the stretch. MAKEIT went into an easy lead when TIEMPO bore out at the first turn, was rated in front but tired suddenly in the final eighth. ROSS lacked speed to be prominent at any stage. BELOW COST went closest to the early pacemaker for three-quarters, dropped back, then came again to outstay tiring horses. WARDELL ORMONT showed a good effort. FOREIGN LEGION could not threaten when put to a drive. THE BARD tired badly in the last quarter mile. FLAT ROCK was outrun and bled. POLO BAR seems to be off form and raced poorly. The latter, in tight quarters for five-eighths, secured racing room and finished with a rush on the outside. SHANTEB forced a steady pace and continued gamely after making repeated efforts. SIR DEAN, far out of contention, closed a good gap. POWDER MONKEY raced in spots while in close quarters. MORESORIS saved ground and raced well. TEDDY CARL raced poorly.
