ROBERTS PILOTS THREE WINNERS AT KEENELAND -r a a ga DOUBLE FOR HEADLEY Old Nassau Outruns Galsun in the Rookwood Purse. Good Sized Crowd Enjoys Lexington Sport Under Pleasant Weather Conditions Track Slow. LEXINGTON, Ky., April -19. With a good-sized and enthusiastic crowd enjoying the sport under pleasant weather conditions, although the track was off, due to showers yesterday, Keeneland started its second short week of racing this afternoon with the Rookwood Purse as the principal attraction. Run over the mile and one-sixteenth distance, it provided an interesting contest, with Old Nassau gaining a handy victory to give Hal Price Headley a double for the day and jockey Porter Roberts a triple. Old Nassau won by two lengths over Calumet Farms Galsun, as A. B. Hancocks Re cussion followed at the tetters heels. Valted, a slight favorite over Old Nassau and Galsun, was fourth, while Whipowill and Royal Sortie completed the field. The previous Headley winner was Copy Cat, a Kentucky Derby eligible, also ridden by Roberts. His first successful ride was on Romaunt. TRACK BECOMES GOOD. A slow track prevailed for the first three races, but, drying out steadily, it was good thereafter. However, Old Nassau was held to 1:48 in winning the Rookwood. In close quarters in the run to the first turn, the four-year-old son of Pharamond II. Miss Tony was guided to the outside when the chance appeared, but Roberts had him under restraint until leaving thr back stretch. In the meantime Whipowill and Valted showed the way, but Old Nassau went past them on the second turn when making his run. He came to the stretch with an advantage of two lengths, which he maintained under steady urging to the end. Galsun was reserved in third position until the final quarter but although making up some ground when called upon he was unable to trouble the Headley colt, although staving off the late bid of Recussion on the inside. Although bearing out badly on the turn, the Greentree Stables Romaunt, the favorite, was good enough to graduate from the ranks of juvenile maiden platers in the Continued on twenty-second page. The gelded son of Royal Minstrel and Red Red Rose had to be hard ridden by Porter Roberts to outgame J. D. Weils Little Pinkey by a nose as Hal Price Headleys Grape Vine was another length and a half away. Arboreal was fourth among the dozen starters. COPY CAT GRADUATES. Hal Price Headleys Copy Cat, a full brother to Larranaga and an eligible for the Kentucky Derby, graduated from the maiden ranks in his second outing of the season in the second event, at six furlongs. In gaining a double for himself, jockey Roberts had to hustle the son of Apprehension and Garden of Allah II. along all the way to defeat Calumet Farms Volo Snow by a neck. J. O. Keenes Don Cossack was five lengths away in third place and well before Nutrush and the seven other non-winning three-year-olds. Range Dust, swift-moving chestnut son of Neddie Sun Affinity, from the Valdina Farms, made it two straight victories when he took the measure of Express by a half length in a driving finish in the Woodvale Purse, a dash over the Headley course, which was third on the card. Batter, favorite in the field of eight which competed, finished in third place. Strongly handled by jockey Earl Steffen, Range Dust collared Express after heading into the home lane and forged to the front. However, after gaining the lead the Valdina colorbearer had to extend himself to the utmost in order to retain his advantage to the end. It was virtually a two-horse duel all the way. Leading all the way, Shining Heels, owned by A. L. and Mrs. C. H. Ferguson, easily accounted for the fourth race, at six furlongs, defeating Mrs. Edward Haughtons Bustle by three lengths, as Hal Price Head-leys Fountain Head, the favorite, was another two and a half lengths away. Sister Polly was fourth in the field of av dozen ,000 plater three-year-olds.
