THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 WISE FOX Bay Colt, by Gallant Fox Minerva; owned by A. G. Tarn. Trained by A. G. Tarn. ! By NORMS BOYDEN J Only one race, but his last, qualifies Wise Fox for inclusion in this series while bringing him into consideration for the Kentucky Derby and similar events. That lone performance of merit was scored in the Louisiana Derby in which the son of Gallant Fox and Minerva, by Ambassador IV., bred by William Woodward but now owned by A. G. Tarn, ran the mile and one furlong in 1:51 under 114 pounds to defeat Bunny Baby by a head as Sir Raleigh was a well-beaten third and Bourbon King fifth. If Wise Fox had shown similar efforts previously, he probably would not be getting so much attention now, but that performance was the result of sharp improvement and indicated thereby that he may become even more capable, particularly when he is asked to run over longer distances of ground. The breeding of Wise Fox coupled with the manner in which he came around towards the end of the winter season gives him strong possibilities. On both sides of his family he is a colt that should improve after his first season. As far as he has gone, he has done just that and, being a half-brother to Faireno, a near-champion, if not the top three-year-old at the end of the 1932 season, Wise Fox deserves more opportunities to determine his exact status. He will get them, too, because Tarn is aiming him at the Kentucky Derby. Wise Fox doesnt belong in the same category with Stagehand as yet, but he is another example of a horse that was a failure as a juvenile, finding himself as he went along, and especially when the distances were stretched out. Stagehand came to hand late and lacked the speed to go well in sprints, but while Wise Fox got in his own way as a youngster, he did develop some speed to learn what it was to finish in front. Under James Fitzsimmons, Wise Fox did not reach the races until August at Saratoga. Unable to get close in starts there, he skipped the meeting at Aqueduct, Belmont and Jamaica to run four times at Empire City in October. He just wasnt able to produce speed enough to be troublesome, although finishing third on two occasions in maiden races. Two months later, in his first start of the winter, Wise Fox finished first in a maiden race, at one mile, but was disqualified, and he laid away for another five weeks. Fitzsimmons was anxious to develop him into Flamingo Stakes timber, but the Gallant Fox colt failed to come around in three outings, and so was sold to Tarn. In his first effort for the Canadian horseman, Wise Fox was second at Tropical Park to Time and Again in a dash of five and one-half furlongs, which he would have won but for being taken back out of trouble right after the start. Two days later he graduated in a six-furlong dash at the expense of Birdlea, Wise Counsel and similar fair three-year-olds. He then ran a mile and sixty yards in 1:44 under 116 pounds to win easily over Becky Bates, Birdlea and Lourdes, and Tarn was tempted to ship him to New Orleans. In the Louisiana Derby Wise Fox followed Bunny Babys pace closely to the stretch, where he wore her down in a long, hard drive, covering the distance within two-fifths of the track record. Sir Raleigh, which finished two lengths back, lost considerable ground in the race, while Bourbon King was almost knocked down on the first turn but, nevertheless, Wise Fox turned in an effort meriting attention. From a breeding standpoint, he can develop into a topnotcher over a route. Gal- lant Fox was at home going a mile and one-quarter or two miles. Faireno, half-brother of Wise Fox, won the Belmont, Lawrence Realization and numerous other stakes, their dam, Minerva, being by Ambassador IV., from Arrowshaft, by Ogden, out of the stakes-winning Quiver. Improvement in Wise Fox may be expected, and if so, hell be troublesome. fAjax Flying Fox a "Teddy J Amie Z . iRondeau i Bay Ronald 2 -i -: . c Dorcmi . . 1 Li V " Spearmint I Carbine ; LPIucky i Liege....
