STAGEHANDS LATEST WORK Gallops Mile and an Eighth in Company With The Chief. Milky Way Farm Stables Tiger Only Other Important Derby Candidate Seen on the Track. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 19. Measuring up to advance notices in their first long workouts since arriving here from California, the Derby favorite, Stagehand, and his formidable stable companion, The Chief, also scheduled to carry Maxwell Howards colors in the sixty-fourth running of Kentuckys great turf event at Churchill Downs on May 7, travelled a mile and a furlong together in 1:57 this morning. Considering that the two Ohio candidates were only mildly urged during a brief part of the trial, the workouts were about the best by Derby horses prepping here. As showers yesterday afternoon had no perceptible affect on the track, and skies were cloudless this morning, Earl Sande was favored by good conditions for this important training of the Howard three-year-olds. As none of the other important Derby hopes housed at the local track were called on for anything more than light exercise, Stagehand and The Chief had the Derby training stage practically to themselves. SHORT GALLOP. The Milky Way Farms Tiger, winner of the Arkansas Derby and highly regarded for the local race, was the only other prominent eligible to breeze, but his work was confined to three furlongs, trainer Robert McGarvey, intending to send him a longer distance tomorrow. Hard held, he ran the three-eighths in :39 and for the first time wore blinkers. Gangplank, a reserve candidate in Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable, which will place chief reliance in Redbreast, went three-quarters in 1:16 and galloped out seven-eighths in 1:31. As is his program, Sande had Stagehand and The Chief on the track shortly after 6 oclock. Stagehand had Jack Westrope in the saddle, who will pilot the son of Sickle and Stagecraft in the Derby, while Harry Woods was astride The Chief, a son of Pennant and Transit. Following a gallop, the f Continued on twentv-aemnd rinpe. STAGEHANDS LATEST WORK Continued from first page. Howard horses broke at the stand, with The Chief on the inside and leading his stable-i mate by about a neck, which advantage he retained throughout the drill. RIDERS RATE MOUNTS. For three-quarters Westrope and Woods rated their mounts under stout holds and then, after hand riding them for a quarter, the horses once more were placed under restraint. For the opening quarter mile they were timed in :26 and after completing four furlongs in :52, they went on to the three-quarters post in 1:19. Then, under mild urging, they put seven furlongs in their wake in 1:31, while the mile was negotiated in 1:43. The ready manner in which the Howard horses greatly quickened their strides to travel the fourth quarter in :24 greatly pleased their young trainer and impressed all of the many horsemen who timed them. The two three-year-olds came out of their trials in good condition and, after they had cooled out, Sande reiterated intentions of starting The Chief, which has not been to the post since last year, in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland a week from Thursday, all hinging on no interruption in his training here. Should Sande decide to pass up the Blue Grass Stakes, he still has another opportunity to run The Chief and also Stagehand in the Derby Trial Stakes, at a mile, here on the Tuesday before the Derby. Stagehand is not eligible for the Blue Grass.
