CRACK BAND IN DERBY Ten or Twelve Expected to Start Next Saturday. Greentree Stable Ships Birthday and Gangplank to Aurora for 2,000 Feature to Be Run on Saturday. AURORA, 111., May 24.— A field of ten or twelve seemed likely today for Saturdays running of the Fox Valley Jockey Clubs 2,000 added Illinois Derby here at Aurora, and prospects are for an interesting renewal of the fixture. Besides a number of the better three-year-olds which have been on the scene since the local season opened, the field will be augmented by several well-regarded eligibles from other points to lend color to the stake, which features the last days racing at the Aurora course. According to word received from Louisville, Birthday and Gangplank, the candidates of Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable, will be here tomorrow. That trainer John M. Gaver has serious designs on the Illinois Derby is seen in the fact that Eddie Arcaro, first string rider for the fashionable Greentree establishment, is coming from the East to handle one of the horses next Saturday. Arcaro recently achieved the ambition of every jockey by riding a winner of the Kentucky Derby, Lawrin. Leigh Cotton, chief assistant to Gaver, is coming here from Churchill Downs with Birthday and Gangplank and will look after their final preparation for the race. INVADERS DUE. Among other invaders due here are Gov. Chandler, which is to perform under the colors of Mrs. Kirby Ramsey, and John One, j I the property of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky j Way Farm stable. These horses also are due from Louisville, while it is possible that ! the Calumet Farm of Warren Wright may i j start one of three which it made eligible. I The three Wright candidates are Bull Lea, j j Taxes and Sickle T., and since the stable is : I 1 quartered at Lincoln Fields, it is not unlikely that one or two of them will be vanned over for the 2,000 feature. Also expected momentarily is Elooto, owned by Mrs. M. E. OToole of Chicago, which received his preparation at River 1 Downs and which was well enough regarded to be a staiter in the Derby. Of the horses already here which have been groomed for the closing day stake, those which seem most likely to be among the starters are A. R. Borns Silver Sarah, P. L. ; Kelleys Count Valiant, James Emerys Dolly Val, the Wesley Sears Farms Xavier, A. G. Tarns Pelter and Frank Serembas Fairflax and My Feng. TWENTY-SEVEN NAMED. Nominations for the Derby closed last Saturday with the names of twenty-seven three-year-olds and if an even dozen of them get to the post the race will have a gross value of 3,470.
