LITTLE DRIFT VICTRESS Turns in Front-Running Race to Score at Aurora Track. Defeats Hilsinger and The Millay — Many Upsets Occur at Fox Valley Course. AURORA. 111., May 24.— Mrs. E. E. Martins Little Drift turned in a game performance to win the six furlongs fifth race, one of the better events on Tuesdays card here at the Aurora track. The daughter of Ariel cut out her own pace, repulsed several challenges and still had enough left to score with almost a length to spare. She was well handled by apprentice Robert Conley and those who supported her in the mutuels received 3 to 1 for their money. Closest to the Martin filly at the wire was Hilsinger while The Millay ran third and Star Bess fourth. Muscle In and Swift Lad were the only other contestants. Little Drift, achieving her first victory of the meeting, stepped the distance over a slow track in 1:14*% which was an excellent performance, the condition of the racing strip considered. STAB BESS ALEBT. Star Bess broke first, but Little Drift soon took command, and once in front she remained there. Both Hilsinger and The Mil- | | lay presented stout challenges, but she met them gamely and drew out slightly near the end. Hilsinger ultimately beat The Millay a length for the place, while Star Bess was another two lengths back at the wire. Swift Lad dwelt at the start and then never threatened. The sport was staged under more pleasant conditions today, for skies were only partly overcast and there was no sign of rain in the air. A good crowd, considerably larger than yesterdays turnout, was on hand for the seven-race card. Outsiders finished first and second in the six furlongs fourth number, in which Mrs. E. Oros Idle Worker led Allegory under the wire by a close margin. Both of them come from behind under hard riding to finish one, two, separated by only a nose as M. J. Bren-nan ran third and Whip Snake fourth. LONG SHOT WINNER. One of the longest-priced winners of the meeting won the second race, a contest of f five and one-half furlongs, when Miss Ivory f got home first and rewarded her backers to the extent of 3.80 for . The daughter of 1 Misstep, guided by Paul Ryan, took the lead I on the outside approaching the last eighth l and then steadily drew out to score with i two and one-half lengths to spare. Grey Squaw accounted for second honors, while Blond Jester was third. Mario, performing under the colors of W. C. Gillem, got up to score a narrow victory in the third race, and those who backed him and Miss Ivory in the "Daily Double" received 82. Mario was held at odds of a little more than 4 to 1. Polante Seth was second and Golden Quest a close third. Mario, with C. Fields at the reins, moved into a contending position after going a quarter, responded to strong urging in the drive and reached the front in the last stride to get the nod of the judges. Polante Seth also finished fast, while Golden Quest had been a sharp factor from the start and had been in front a furlong from the wire. ▲
