| | f f 1 I l i HOPE DIAMOND STAKE WINNER Triumphs in Thirty -Third Running of Victoria Stakes at Woodbine. Kentucky-Bred Juvenile Becently Purchased by C. N. Mooney— Crowd of 20,000 Witness Holiday Program. TORONTO, Ont. May 24.— Hope Diamond, bay juvenile daughter of Apprehension and Precious recently acquired in Kentucky by C. N. Mooney, local sportsman, carried his blue and white silks to a successful conclusion in the thirty-third running of the Victoria Stakes, feature of the holiday sport of ■ the Ontario Jockey Club this afternoon. Sir I Marlboro, from the stable of Conny Smythe, I raced to the place a length off the Mooney colorbearer, while Taut, most highly regarded, took third place two lengths away. Indignant, stable companion of Sir Marlboro, and H. R. Bains Dark Channelle made up the balance of the field. This old event which failed to receive enough entrants for competition in 1937 carried the value of ,140 to the successful owner. BEMILLABD STABS. Hope Diamond was well ridden by P. Re-millard and it marked his second winning ride of the afternoon, having previously piloted Trajectory to his thrilling victory in the second race. A crowd in the neighborhood of 20,000 packed the course for the holiday program. The track, which was slow for the first three events, was quickly improving in the bright sunshine and wind, and as the feature was run the racing strip was termed good. Starter Rowe sent the field in the Victoria I Stakes away after a slight delay. Cosgrave i j Stables Taut was first to show the way, but before two furlongs had been traversed Sir Marlboro took up the pacemaking burden. As they rounded the turn and entered the stretch Sir Marlboro enjoyed a two lengths advantage, with Taut in second place | clear before Hope Diamond. As the field reached the furlong post Sir Marlboro was a length in advance, while Hope Diamond moved up on the outside within a head of Taut. In the drive to the finish Hope Diamond moved on to a length lead as the finish line was passed. Taut meanwhile was faltering and was two lengths off but well before the others. j Chuckler, racing in the silks of the Park-I I wood Stable of R. S. McLaughlin, boosted the stables victories at the meeting to four when in handy fashion he raced to defeat I j Riverdale Stables Friskiness by a length and one-half in the running of the Windsor Plate Handicap, secondary feature of the j day. Third place went to H. Talbots Skyros, | with G. M. Hendries Horus fourth.
