DERBY CANDIDATES EN ROUTE Greentree Sending Gangplank and Birthday, and Mrs. Ramsey Gov. Chandler for Illinois Race. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 24.— Three of the leading candidates for the Illinois Derby down for renewal at Aurora Saturday are en route to the Fox Valley course. They are Mrs. Payne Whitneys Birthday and Gangplank and Gov. Chandler, currently racing under the silks of Mrs. K. Ramsey, but scheduled to be turned over to Howard Hawks Blue Moon Stable immediately after filling his Aurora engagement Saturday. John M. Gaver, trainer of the Greentree establishment, put the two Whitney three-year-olds through private tests on a slow track at Churchill Downs early today and except for speed blow-outs Friday, they are ready for the Derby. Drilling in company, they galloped eight furlongs in 1:45%, the1 three-quarters in 1:18%. Neither was extended. CHICAGO-OWNED CANDIDATE. John One and Mountain Ridge, Chicago-owned candidates for the same stake belonging to Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, worked yesterday on a sloppy track, the former clicking off a mile in 1:45%, breezing, while Mountain Ridge breezed seven furlongs in 1:33. Robert McGarvey, trainer of the Mars horses, made a last-minute switch from C-Note to Mountain Ridge as a running companion for John One. With others in this large establishment, the Milky Way three-year-olds go to Lincoln Fields and from there will be transferred to the Fox Valley track. Trainer Gaver announced that Eddie Ar-caro, contract rider for the Greentree Stable, is coming west from New York to ride one of his employers starters in the Illinois race. Arcaro achieved the ambition of all riders when he piloted Lawrin to victory in " the Kentucky Derby.
