INSCOELDA ADDS WALDEN TO LIST OF VICTORIES BEATS VOUTANT A HEAD Volitants Habit of Loafing Big Factor in Defeat. Winner First Filly to Score in Race Since 1922 Fast Flight Disqualified in Opener. BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 8. Inscoelda, victorious in the Arlington Lassie Stakes, but denied a true chance to triumph in the Selima Stakes, thoroughly established herself as one of the outstanding two-year-olds of the current season by defeating Volitant in the thirty-second running of the Walden Handicap before a large election day crowd at old Pimlico today. Finishing with a brilliant rush, Herbert M. Woolfs Kansas-bred daughter of Insco and Griselda won over the Saratoga Stables good colt by a head to garner first prize of ,860. Four lengths back of them at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth race over a slow, exacting track, was another filly, the King Ranchs Ciencia. Volitants penchant for loafing when In the clear may have cost him the victory, but Inscoeldas performance was a good one, nevertheless, and she well deserved her success, as she was giving her opponent three pounds on the scale. Under her 116 pounds impost she covered the distance in 1:49. In becoming the first filly to capture the Walden since Oui Ouis triumph in 1922, Inscoelda was permitted to settle into her stride slowly by Johnny Longden, with the result that she had only one horse beaten in the field of nine good youngsters turning into the back stretch. In the meantime, Time Alone was setting the pace, but was lapped by Impound and Volitant, both of which were under strong restraint. CATCHES LEADERS. Inscoelda began picking up the leaders going down the back stretch as she threaded her way through the field, but upon approaching the far turn Longden placed her on the outside, to take advantage of the better going. Time Alone collapsed at the bend and Impound went to the front, but within a furlong Volitant breezed by him to take the lead. When he opened up a clear lead In the stretch Volitant was shaken up intermittently by Harry Richards to keep him at his task, but nevertheless Inscoelda advanced steadily on the outside and was at his heels entering the final sixteenth". Richards realized the challenge was coming and went to work with a vengeance on Volitant, but the Display colt wouldnt respond as the Insco filly continued her drive to drop her head in front a few. strides from the wire. Their battle carried them well ahead of the others, of which Ciencia wore down the tiring Impound, alter having been well placed all the way. Tin Devil, which gave Volitant strong opposition in the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Stakes, was fifth, followed by Dark Watch, Time Alone, Chief Onaway and Sure Off. Volitant was the favorite, but Inscoelda was given moderate support. DIXIELAND WINS. Passing the others during the final half mile, Dixieland captured the fourth race in the interests of .Dan B. Midkiff, as the Mills-dale Stables Bain Marie was half a length back and leading I. Romms Idle Way by a Continued on twenty-seventh page. The six furlongs event was for medium grade filly and mare platers and attracted seven, of which Idle Way was made an odds-on choice. Bobby Dotter had Dixieland well back, on the outside in the opening quarter, as Blue-field and Devils Mate forged well ahead of the field, waiting until making the turn before giving the Kentucky filly her head. As the leaders began weakening entering the stretch, Idle Way challenged, but just as she was ready to take command Dixieland swept past. The first disqualification of the meeting occurred with the running of the opening event when Fast Flight was set back after finishing in front. Forever Green, owned by John C. Clark, -Jr., was awarded the victory as Max Hirschs Jest Once was given second money and H. W. Jacksons Gay Casino third honors. Nick Wall, rider of Forever Green, claimed foul as Fast Flight crossed over in front of his mount when going to the front in the stretch. Fast Flight reached the wire three lengths before Forever Green, which barely nosed out Jest Once, while Gay Casino was a close fourth after setting the pace until weli into the stretch. Fast Flight and Jest Once were two of the five sent to the post by Hirsch, the others being Lyde, Winning Streak and Lynxholm. All were ridden by apprentice riders, and the entry in the field of a dozen ordinary maiden juveniles was installed the favorite. SUN ANTIOCH SETS PACE. Sun Antioch, the favorite, led all the way to take the second race, at six furlongs, but Mrs. F. J. Vollmers veteran sprinter had to be hard ridden through the stretch by Johnny Gilbert to defeat H. W. Jacksons Surprise Box by a neck. The Liberty Lane Stables Golden Silence was another length back as Bread King was fourth in the field of nine ordinary platers. Gilbert had Sun Antioch under careful rating while setting the pace, as Golden Silence attended him closely, and in the stretch the Sun Briar gelding was unable to hold Surprise Box safe after the former had tired. Leading for every step of the journey, A. C. Comptons veteran distance performer, Mad Frump, chalked up his third score of the year and the first of the present fall season in Maryland when he accounted for the third race, at a mile and one-half. Under the intelligent rating of jockey R. Dotter, the nine-year-old son of Mad Hatter dominated all of the running for the full distance to beat the favorite, Howard, by a length and one-quarter as third went to B. A. Halls Suntosun. Another favorite suffered defeat when French Trap went unplaced among the dozen lowly platers meeting at a mile and one-sixteenth in the sixth race, the winner turning up in Mrs. H. J. Mohrte Uvalde by a nose over Mrs. W. W. Vaughans Mahlette- as HiT. Rorabaughs Fredalva was another four lengths away.
