MARYLAND FALL SALES OPEN! Balko .Filly Tops Vendue at ,250 Paid by H. A. Herkman Balko Changes Owners at Low Figure. j BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 8 The Maryland Horse Breeders Association staged the first of three sales sessions at the Pikesville Armory on Monday night, with seventy-two head of foals, yearlings, mares and stallions bringing a total of 8,245, an average of 53. The highest price of the night was the ,250 which H. A. Herkman paid for a yearling filly by Balko Sweep Out, by Sweep On, from the consignment of Alfred G. Vanderbilt. Only two other offerings brought over ,000, one being the stallion. By-Pass II., which was knocked down to Frank Orsatti, for ,100 and the other Armadale, a mare in the R. S. Clark consignment who went to Gary Black for ,160. The biggest surprise of the night was the sale of the stallion, Balko, to Frank Orsatti, of Hollywood, for ,000. Orsatti was the most surprised man in the armory when he called his final bid and no one raised him. Along with By-Pass II., Balko will go to California. Two other stallions were sold, Baldpate going to Charles Beal for 25 and Diecaster, after much urging on the auctioneers" part, finally drawing from Carroll Nedaney an offer of 5. SOLD CHEAPLY. Some mares went for the proverbial song, in fact, some which were in foal to proven stallions brought less than the fee asked for the stallion. But unfortunately at least one half dozen were announced as blind in one eye, spoiling what otherwise might have been good sales. Yearlings were the most popular offerings of the night. Alfred G. Vanderbilt sold nine in all, four colts totaling ,900,, for an average of 75 and five fillies bringing ,325 for an average of 65. A Balko filly went to H. A. Herkman for ,250 and another by Balko, named Gandy, was knocked down to J. A. Healey for 25. A good crowd was present when the first horse entered the ring. The majority, however, were spectators and so many children were present auctioneer Finney requested that the parents return tonight without the offspring. Noted at the ringside were T. J. Healey, J. Healy, Clarence Buxton, Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Bud Stotler, Adolph Pons, Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Salmon, Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Howard, G. R. Bryson, Major G. L. Stryker, Janon Fisher, Jr., J. Merryman Black, Carl Jackson, husband of Rosa Pon-selle, Frank A. Bonsai, H. Nelson Bond and Robert Castle.
