I FAIR GROUNDS TURF NOTES Johnny Hernandez, son of the popular "Butsey," got in from Sportsmans Park and will share the riding for the stable with "Peanuts" McCadden. C. Beal will bring ten horses for the meeting, headed by the good ones, Javamocha and Patsey Begone. J. H. Benedetto will bring five head from Chicago, including What a Pal and Rex Equinus. The latter was a recent winner at Sportsmans Park. Word was received that jockey Bobby Vedder will return to defend his riding title won last year. Vedder has his job cut out for him, with several of the leading performers of the country scheduled to be here. The local turfman, Steve Valenti, is training three horses for the meeting, Walter L., Ruffday and Blackie. Some people may be superstitious, but Clarence Davison is not one of them. The well-known horseman, who almost annually has one of the most powerful stables at the Fair Grounds, got in Saturday from Sportsmans Park with the unlucky number of thirteen cquines, but laughing at the talk of hoodooism, said he expected the coming campaign starting Thanksgiving Day to be as successful as others in the past. Chance Ray, one of the outstanding stars of last years local campaign, featured the shipment. Since leaving here, Chance Ray has continued in winning stride, annexing four triumphs, with sundry seconds and thirds. One of his triumphs was in a ,000 stake at Lincoln Fields, in which he beat, among others, the brilliant Mucho Gusto. Others accompanying the stable were Salaam, Nav-anod, Masterpiece, Sanctity, Carl B., Boston Sound, Getalong, Bucks Image, Eternal Wave, Paulson, Highman and Stormy Sea. Most of these ran well here last season. Davison, following the unloading of his horses, left for Kentucky to possibly purchase some young stock. ; 1
