TRY TO STRENGTHEN STABLES West Coast Horsemen Scouting for Promising Material- ,000,000 Santa Anita Prizes in View. ARCADIA, Calif., Dec. 6 With the approach of the opening of the Santa Anita racing season on December 31, horsemen are scouting about to add to their stables to try for the all-time record of close to ,000,000 offered in stakes and purses. Col. E. E. Fogelson of Dallas, Texas, who has Dauber, Gray Jack, Grey Count and a string of eight now quartered at Santa Anita Park, has made a major purchase in the two-year-old filly Smart Crack from T. P. Morgan, so that he will have a. prominent candidate for the 0,000 added Santa Anita Derby on February 22. Its another gray horse to carry the Fogelson banner, and a good one. This sprightly daughter of Kiev Wisecrack won her first six starts this year before meeting defeat and is highly rated. With Dauber, the Preakness winner, galloping soundly again, and Gray Jack and Grey Count to be figured, Colonel Fogelson promises to be a factor in racing at Santa Anita this season. BUILDING STRING. Charles S. Howard is evidently not going to place his sole reliance in Seabiscuit, the champion. He is building up his already extensive string by buying the good mare Carvola from E. K. Bryson and obtaining the two-year-old Hy Camp from T. P. Morgan. Carvola, a five-year-old by Carlaris Volga, is evidently being figured in the big breeding establishment that Howard will have when Seabiscuit is retired to the stud at some future date. I There will likely be some more transfers of top horses before the meeting gets under way. It is reported that Louis B. Mayer is still in the market to add some ranking Cali-fornia-breds to his formidable string. Evidence of this was the report that Bing Crosby had turned down Mayers offer of 5,000 for High Strike, which is the preseason favorite for the California State Championship.
