! 1 FAIR GROUNDS TURF NOTES I s s After spending several weeks in the Crescent City, Jack Gillum made his departure for Phoenix, Ariz., where he will assemble a stable for racing at that point this winter. Charles Januska, a recent arrival from Maryland, registered three horses with racing secretary R. A. Leigh. They are Jadaan for L. L. Westmoreland; and Invermark and a yearling bay filly by Kantar Three Cheers, for the account of H. Januska. Miss Sherry Balleras, owner of Biography and Sherry B., left for Columbus, Ohio, to attend the burial of a nephew who died several days ago. Miss Balleras will return to New Orleans some time next week. John B. Thornwald, who has one horse at the Fair Grounds in charge of Frank Kurinec, and the main division of his stable In Florida in care of L. M. Holmes, came in from Dallas for a visit at the Fair Grounds. Mike Walsh was an arrival from New York and plans to remain in the Crescent City for an indefinite period, probably until the opening of Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs. Word was received here by R. P. Mc-Auliffe, a member of the official personnel of Tropical Park that the office at that track has been opened for the registration of horses by Pat C. Galliger. McAuliffe leaves for Miami, Fla., Wednesday. Harry Saladin received the two-year-old Unrequited from Lexington, Ky., this morning and will train the youngster for Dr. Charles E. Hagyard for the remainder of the Fair Grounds meeting. The plater Lena J. changed hands for the second time this season, when she was claimed out of the seventh race Monday by Woodcock and King for ,000. The partnership got the racer in a draw. J. Bolser, a recent arrival from Shreve-port, registered the platers Stingy and High Color and found quarters outside the grounds for his charges. Owner-trainer D. P. Veneziano checked in from Maryland and assumed charge of the horses he has had in quarters at the Fair Grounds for the past week. Jockey Ralph Eccard, who rode with a good measure of success at the Fair Grounds last winter and is attached to the stable of G. W. Ogle, came in from his home in Chewsville, Md., and made application for a license to ride here. Courtney Forsythe has teen engaged to handle the riding engagements of jockey Harry Krovitz, 100-pounder under contract to O. L. Foster. Clint DeWitt, veteran trainer of thox-ough-breds, who has been without racing material for the past few years, is seriously ill in Charity Hospital here, and George Swain is raising funds among horsemen and officials at the Fair Grounds to help defray the stricken horsemans expenses. First call on thev services of jockey Tyrus Meloche has been aken by Miss L. C. White for the remainder of the Fair Grounds meeting- ..
