DEW OUT UNTIL AFTER JAN. 1 NEW ORLEANS, La., Dec. 6. Apprentice Earl Dew, one of the cleverest youngsters to sport the silks this year, will not be able to make his return to the saddle until after the turn of the new year, as the result of a broken leg that he suffered early in the Fair Grounds meeting. While the break is knitting as rapidly as could be expected, it will be some time before Dew can place any pressure on the injured member. Dew was topping the jockey list at the time of the accident and many are of the opinion that the western lad would have paced the reinsmen for the Louisiana Jockey Club meeting had he not become incapacitated. With Dew out of the running, "Chuck" Charlton is likely to prove the top ranking reinsman of the 1938-39 season at the Crescent City track. In addition to displaying fine ability in the saddle, Charlton will have the use of, the apprentice allowance until next September.
