WOOLF UP ON FLYING BONNY Star Rider Will Pilot L. B. Mayers Star in Spreckels Handicap. Sweet Nancy Considered a Strong Contender Among the Entries Adams and Long-den" Going to Caliente Sunday. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Dec. 9. Georgie Woolf, one of Americas most celebrated riders, will have his first mount in the West since his history-making exhibition aboard Seabiscuit when he rides Louis B; Mayers Flying Bonny in the A. B. Spreckels Handicap at Tanforan Saturday afternoon. Likewise, it will be the western debut of Flying Bonny, considered one of Americas outstanding fillies and winner of six straight races in the East during the summer. Flying Bonny is top weight in the Spreckels with 119 pounds, and Woolf, although quite heavy, will have no trouble making the poundage. With Woolf aboard, Flying Bonny and Carl Bierman on Mask and Wig, the Mayer entry will in all probability be favored going to the post in the ,500 added six furlongs affair. Mask and Wig, easy winner of his only start at Tanforan, has 114 pounds. Flying Bonny and Mask and Wig do not comprise the only double entry in the race, as Dear Diary and Dont Forget will race coupled as the Rowan-McCarthy entry. They are a pair of flashy California-breds and have improved greatly since last winter. Dear Diary started many times before graduating from the maiden ranks, but is now considered just about tops among the home-bred fillies, as witness her weight of 115 pounds. Many believed that she would have cake-walked the Tanforan Lassie Stakes had she been named for that event. Dont Forget has been racing in consistent fashion. CHURCHS REPRESENTATIVE. Second high weight in the Spreckels is Sweet Nancy, from the Norman W. Church stable, considered a strong contender for the honors. Sweet Nancy, regarded as an outstanding filly, recently turned in a fine workout over a difficult track at Tanforan, and appears to be ready. She will have Silvio Coucci in the saddle. The Italian rider, who will leave for Santa Anita Saturday night, remained over especially to ride Sweet Nancy. The daughter of Gallant Sir has 117 pounds. Perfect Blend, on recent performance records, would seem the best of the others. He has been a frequent winner on northern California tracks, and recently registered ever a difficult track. Others in the Spreckels field are Flying Dot, to be ridden by Ralph Neves; Say Judge, to be ridden by Longden; Bubbling Boy, which will have Chojnacki up; Heelplates, with Danny Brammer aboard, and Audacious Lady, on which no rider has Continued on fifteenth page. l W00LF UP ON FLYING BONNY Continued from first -page. been named. "Shorty" Adams will pilot either Dear Diary or Dont Forget. In addition to the Spreckels Handicap, two other outstanding races will be staged Saturday afternoon. One is the Morvich, named for the best horse ever bred by the late Mr. Spreckels, and the other is the Napa Stoclc Farm, named for his breeding ranch. In the latter event, the French-bred Mt. Vernon H on which owner Raoul Walsh recently "got well" will be a starter and will meet Pala Chief, Jiiius Wilds "ace in the hole"; Tri-plane, Longacres Mile winner, Onus, Wild Turkey, Count Pan, Barnsley and Monsweep. EXCELLENT PROGRAMS. California-breds will go six furlongs in the Morvich, and Better Bet, Clarcarole, Denbigh, Deline Bank, Foam and other consistent animals are in the field. The Saturday program will be made up of three sprints and five distance races. According to latest reports, both Johnny Longden and Shorty Adams will hie themselves to Caliente Sunday, where they will carry on their battle for the American riding championship. Neither was going to go but after trainer Don Cameron ordered Longden to report, Adams refused to permit the Canadian to steal a march on him, and announced his intention of going also. Sundays tussle between the mighty midgets j should pack the fans in at the Caliente plant.
