MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 9. Robert J. Hart, veteran turf executive, has been appointed director of mutuels at Tropical Park, announced Norman W. Graves, president of the Gables Racing Association, here today. Hart took over the Gables totalizator and mutuels plant this week and is preparing them for the opening of the twenty-day meeting opening December 19. Born in St. Louis, Mo., and a resident of Miami for ten years, Hart has served in the mutuel departments at most of the major meetings in America, including Arlington Park, Narragansett Park, Hawthorne, Fair-mount Park, Lincoln Fields and Sportsmans Park. To Floridians the Hart family is well known in sports through the executives daughter, Doris, 13-year-old girl tennis star, and a son, "Bud," well known in national tennis competition in the East. Doris Hart represented Miami in state and national tennis tourneys during the past year and teamed with Bill Hardy, Miami University tennis captain, in mixed doubles. FLORIDA TENNIS CHAMPION. "Bud" Hart is a three-time Florida state boys tennis champion. In former years Frank D. Schuyler served in the dual role of resident manager and mutuels director. With the expansion of Tropical Park racing, the double duties became too heavy and he requested the appointment of a man to take over the mutuels. Hart was selected. Schuyler will continue to be resident manager. Changes in the list of officers of the Gables Association this season include the election of George W. Langford, Miami contractor and sportsman, as vice-president and John Patton, Sportsmans Park official, as treasurer. An addition to the staff of racing officials is James Ross, Jr., as entry clerk. Ross, a member of the staff at Narragansett Park and several major Maryland tracks, is a son of James Ross, superintendent of Havre de Grace. William H. Shelley, brother of Robert S. Shelley, racingr secretary and handicapper, has been named assistant secretary. Robert P. McAuliffe will move into the placing stand, to succeed Leo S. Shea, who is seriously ill in Arizona. Illness of Tom Brown, for many years Tropical Park paddock judge, brought about the appointment of Owen E. Pons to that post. Pons also serves as patrol judge. ASSOCIATION OFFICIALS.
