1 - - t Kentucky Derbys of Past-Charts and Future Books ; 1930 1 The fifty-sixth running of the Kentucky Derby was won by one of Americas most famous horses. Gallant Fox not only carried off this much-coveted stake fixture but became the champion three-year-old of 1930 as well as the largest money winner in the world, also the only horse in turf history to win over 00,000 in one year of racing. He added to his fame in the stud by siring among others the brilliant Omaha, which won the Kentucky Derby of 1935. Both Gallant Fox and Omaha, father and son, are among the few "American Triple Crown" winners, each having triumphed in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, also adding the Arlington Classic as a good measure. Strange as it may appear now. the Derby of 1930 was more or less preplexing to the players in the pre-Derby wagering, the opening quotations listing five horses at 10 to 1. Little change was made during the first four weeks of future book operations, and not until April 29 was a pronounced favorite revealed when Gallant Fox was backed down to 4 to 1. His odds dropped to 7 to 5 on May 13 and he went to the post in the Derby on May 17 at 119 to 100. The story of the race is best told by a perusal of the chart, which is here reproduced: FIFTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. Woodtrap, May 21, 1921 2:036 7 106. Fifty-Sixth A rrft"!
