BENEFACTOR DECLARED Owner E. R. Bradley Withdraws Colt From Kentucky Derby. Decides to Save Stable Star for Later Stake Races Injury 4 Not Considered Serious. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 12. Benefactor was declared from the Kentucky Derby today b.- Col. E. R. Bradley after an inspection of the colt at Idle Hour Farm with trainer William Hurley and Dr. Edward "vy. Hagyard, local veterinarian. Colonel Bradley returned from his winter home in Florida last night and today was the first time he had seen the good looking son of Blue Larkspur and Patroness since last fall at Pimlico. The colt suffered a wrench of the flexor tendon of his left foreleg during a highly satisfactory mile and one-quarter workout on March 31. The injury was not noticed until the following day when a filling of the tendon occurred. That enlargement has not entirely disappeared, but the colts condition has been such that trainer Hurley has been able to send him through lengthy gallops all this week. He went two miles this morning through a 400 acre paddock at Idle Hour. "Well forget about the Derby and wait for the races later on," Colonel Bradley stated in announcing the decision to withdraw Benefactor from the Churchill Downs feature. "The colt will be given all the time necessary for his injury to heal before we think about running him," Colonel Bradley said in answer to the question an to whether Benefactor would be able to prepare for the Belmont Stakes. The injury to Benefactor never has been considered serious, but it is of such a nature that the pressure placed on the tendon by hard training probably would cause the horse to break down. Colonel Bradley, who has owned horses for nearly half a century and has seen numerous of his good horses break down, took a philosophical view of Benefactors injury, after which he showed his interest in the other members of his large stable. The venerable sportsman appeared to be enjoying excellent health after his sojourn at Palm Beach.
