THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 EIGHT THIRTY By NOBBIS ROYDEN One of the several colts whose defeats by El Chico made the latter look better is Eight Thirty, the best performer in George D. Widener silks in four or five years. Eight Thirty, a son of the young sire, Pilate, and the High Time mare, Dinner Time, tried El Chico twice at Saratoga in August but just wasnt good enough, although capable enough to be considered by some observers as the second best of the 1938 crop of two-year-olds. Eight Thirty, not a Kentucky Derby candidate because his Philadelphia owner wishes him to have plenty of time to make ready, ran third to El Chico in the United States Hotel Stakes and second to the unbeaten champion in the Saratoga Special, but it was in the former event that he tried the hardest. With the course in slow condition, Eight Thirty was off none too smartly, but Harry Richards rushed him forward with the idea of running El Chico into the ground if pdssible. The Widener colt challenged El Chico after a furlong and pressed him closely down the back stretch, but the fleet son of John P. Grier moved .away rounding the turn to win as he pleased, Invader making a late bid to overtake the tiring Eight Thirty for second honors. In the Special, the track being fast, Eight Thirty was rated back of El Chico until entering the stretch before challenging, but the champion moved away from him in the final furlong to beat him three lengths. William Ziegler, Jr.s, speedster, however, was compelled to equal the Saratoga six-furlong mark of 1:10 of the older horses Polyme-lian and Jyntee to gain such a victory over Eight Thirty. Behind them were Third Degree, Impound and other likely youngsters. Previous to his two clashes with El Chico, Eight Thirty had won the Flash Stakes at the same course, running the five and one-half furlongs in 1:05, fastest time of the meeting, by a head over Maeline, with Ariel Toy third and Johnstown fourth. His debut was made at Delaware Park, in which he defeated a group of maidens in handy fashion over the five-furlong course, following with his successful effort in i the Christiana Stakes at five and one-half furlongs. He opened up a lead of three lengths on his opposition in this race, but unexpectedly shortened his stride towards I the finish and only defeated De.il by a head as Hants was third and Ariel Toy was fourth. HoTever, Richards stated after the race it was his opinion Eight Thirty loafed after getting so far in front. Following the Saratoga Special, Eight Thirty bid for the Albany Handicap, and he reached the end of the six-furlong test a length in advance of Giles County, as T. M. Dorsett was third and Heather Broom fourth, but he was disqualified for swerving in the stretch. Sustaining an injury, the Pilate colt was on the shelf for several weeks and his training had to be forced to get him into the Belmont Futurity. He closed very stoutly in the six and one-half furlongs test over the straight course to lose the decision by half a length to Porters Mite, but New York horsemen generally believe he would have won the race if his training program had not been interrupted. As it was, he finished ahead of numerous good colts, including Third Degree, Johnstown, Impound and Technician. He then was retired for the year. Eight Thirty possesses both staying and speed lines in his breeding. His sire appears to be reviving the Rock Sand male line in this country, the same to which Kayak H. belongs via England and the Argentine. Pilate, whose dam was by the speed sire, The Tetrarch, was a good second to Clock Tower in one .of the fastest Maryland Handicaps at a mile and one-quarter, ever run. Dinner Time was from Seaplane, a daughter of Man o War and Bathing Girl, by Spearmint, the latter likewise the third dam of War Admiral.
