RUMBA GUS WINS STAKE Washington-Owned Juvenile Graduates in Bowies Kindergarten. Defeat of Favored Three-Horse Entry in Stake Is the Fifth Straight Reverse for Choices. BOWIE, Md., April 12. Rumba Gus, carrying the silks of the Washington contractor, Gustav Ring, turned in a sharp effort in his second public appearance, as he came from behind the pace to a clean-cut score in the Bowie Kindergarten, the half-mile juvenile stake, which featured mid-week competition at the Prince Georges County course. At the end, the son of Saxon and No Regrets was just clear of Arden Lass, with the latter taking a photograph decision for the place from Nosy. Halcyon Boy was another length away. The effort netted his owner ,585 in prize money. Bucking a stiff wind through the stretch, the bay colt completed the distance in :49. The three-horse entry, made up of Arden Lass, Nosy and Imprudent, was best backed in a field of nine, providing the fifth reverse of the day for form followers. The sun beat down brightly on the local grounds, but there was a stiff wind blowing, though this hardly was as tough on the faithful as the continued defeat of public choices. The Kindergarten, decidely the most important two-year-old race of the meeting, Drought forth three unbeaten fillies, Imprudent with four in a row to her credit, Ranchos Girl and Pimlico Queen. Each of the latter pair had won two apiece. The first of the trio met with minor interference, Ranchos Girl trying to bear out and succeeding fairly well, while Pimlico Queen simply quit. CLOSING SPEED WINS. Rumba Gus, with the unfashionable Glenn Smith up, left the post a trifle slowly to be outrun for the first quarter of a mile. Turning for home, he was taken to the outside and once in the final straightaway loosed a burst of speed which brought him on to run past the leaders in the last fifty yards. Arden Lass also was shy on early speed. She made her move at the same time as the winner, though not making as wide a turn for home. "Under pressure, she finished in determined fashion but would have been beaten for the place with a trifle farther to go. Nosy was another which did not loom as a contender until the last eighth. He came very wide at the head of the stretch and then went to the inside. With a few more yards to travel he would have been second. Halcyon Boy had the speed to force the pace of Pimlico Queen, but tired in the stretch run. The latter filly gained a clear advantage on her opponents in the run around the turn to be two lengths on top at the three-sixteenths post. In the last eighth she tired badly. Ranchos Girl was pinched back slightly on the far turn and then bore Continued on twenty-third page. RUMBA GUS WINS STAKE Continued from first page. out badly in the final quarter. Praetor was pulled up in the stretch. Pagliacci, winner of Bowies week-end sprint attraction proved a repeater in the six furlongs Blenheim Handicap, where he drove to a half-length triumph over the more favored Sun Egret in the handy time of 1:13. A length and a half back of the runner-up, Ocean Roll finished well to take third money from Gerald by a neck margin. Despite his recent score, the colorbearer of Mrs. E. Graham Lewis was third choice in the machines at 18 to 5, with Sun Egret best fancied of the field. The latter ran coupled with Gerald. During the early stages of the race, Pagliacci was well off the pace moving to the leaders steadily while making the turn and coming around Sun Egret in the stretch. Not until well in the front lane did he make any serious impression on that colts advantage, finally wearing him down in the last hundred yards to draw away slightly at the end. Sun Egret, making his first appearance since late January at Santa Anita, was packing top weight of 123 pounds in his public final for the Harford Handicap on Saturday. The Sun Briar colt attended the pace of Drudgery for the first half mile, coming around him at the top of the stretch and off to a brief lead. In the last sixteenth he shortened stride, and it is probable he needed this conditioning. BY SAFE MARGIN". Tuleyries Lin, a Hot Springs winner which had been beaten off in her two starts over the track, was in a different mood for the six furlongs opener, a claimer for Maryland- breds. Taking the lead at the start, the daughter of Dunlin Black Wand galloped along in front the entire way to win by four lengths with speed to spare. She was not pressed at any time to travel the distance in 1:15. It hardly was public money that made Claude Feltners four-year-old .20 to in the machines. Holton, shifting from Mills to Snider, went in improved style in the six furlongs claimer for three-year-olds which was second on the program. This enabled the son of Osculator Mary Holton to drive to a length victory in the indifferent time of 1:15. His closest attendant at the final furlong post was Ann Mowlee, with Nine-o-Two a pair of lengths farther away as he saved third money by half a length from War Grand. The latter was favorite for the event, with the winner a .45-to- chance. Even the "Eye in the Sky" camera appears to be with Johnny Oros. It required a decision from that invention to give the purse of the mile and a furlong claimer which was third on the card to Justa Flight, a plater which was ably handled by the Illinois apprentice. The son of Flying Ebony Justa Pal, badly beaten in his previous "start over the track with the same boy up, must have been improved by the eleven pounds less weight. As he finished the journey in 1:59, he was a scant nose in advance of Foreign Legion, with the pacemaking Spartan Lady half a length farther away.
