STRIKING TRIBUTE PAID TO LATE SENATOR LEWIS . WASHINGTON, D. C, April 12. Every tribute a democracy can pay its honored dead was today accorded Senator James Hamilton Lewis, of Illinois, Democratic whip of the Senate, in a state funeral held in the Senate chamber. President Roosevelt and his cabinet, the Supreme Court and the diplomatic corps joined the members of Congress at the bier of the slight, pink-whiskered statesman they all knew so well. Lewis died Sunday night. The casket rested through the forenoon in the well of the Senate. Silently his old friends passed by. Their hushed whispers and the wreaths and the trappings of the solemn occasion replaced the usual hustle and bustle of legislative business. Lewis chair and desk remained unoccupied for the day. The services started at 2:30 p. m., with the Senate chaplain, the Rev. Barney Phillips, officiating. Prayer, a brief eulogy, a solo and a duet and the formal service for the dead comprised the ceremony.
