MAX BAER IN NEW YORK NEW YORK, N. Y., April 12. Max Baer, former heavyweight champion of the world, arrived yesterday, to start training for his bout with Lou Nova in Yankee Stadium, June 1. Baer was strangely modest, as he rated himself no better than fourth behind Champion Joe Louis, Tony Galento and Lou Nova. "But," he added, "I hope to battle my way to the top ranking by the end of September. I weigh 218 pounds. I have not had a smoke or a drink in months, and Im serious about regaining the title. I hope Joe Louis still believes I am afraid of him when we meet in September."
