PREPARING LINCOLN FIELDS Col. M. J. Winn Orders Complete Overhauling at Crete Track. Stake Races for Every Saturday and Holiday Planned Opens Chicago Season on May 25. The setting for the opening of the Chicago racing season, which will be ushered in at Lincoln Fields on Thursday, May 25, will be as attractive as the combined efforts of nature and man can make it. Naturally one of the most picturesque courses in the country, Lincoln Fields will undergo considerable beautification within the next few weeks, Col. M. J. Winn, executive director, announced today. Last week Colonel Winn made several visits to the Crete plant, and on these occasions outlined the work to be done. Pastorally there is not much room for improvement to the grounds, but the stands, buildings, clubhouse and fences are to be gone over minutely, and when the work of carpenters and painters has been completed, should lend color to an already resplendant scene. Colonel Winn gave orders to put the program of improvements into motion immediately and that the work must be completed for the opening. Lincoln Fields is making special preparations for its inaugural and the twenty-seven-day meeting as a whole. Although the season opens on a Thursday, never one of the best days in racing, an unusually attractive program is in the making for the occasion in the hope that local interest will justify the efforts of the management and the meeting will get off to a flying start. Besides the opening-day feature, the racing program for the meeting will include stakes for each of the five Saturdays and also Decoration Day. These events, together with a number of overnight races, will be patterned for the better horses of the various classes. Although Colonel Winn, as president of the American Turf Association, will have to give much time to preparations for the staging of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, he will be in Chicago as often as possible to keep in touch with progress at Lincoln Fields. Immediately following the Derby he will come to Chicago, where he makes his home, and remain here. rt-
