KEENELAND TURF NOTES I $ 1 Jockey Melvin Lewis, contract rider for the Brown Hotel Stable, came over from Louisville Wednesday morning. Jack Hodgins, widely known starter who now makes his home in Louisville, is an arrival and expects to remain for the greater part of the meeting. There are twenty-six Kentucky Derby eligi-bles quartered at Keeneland, the trotting track and Fayette County farms. Benefactor is at Idle Hour Farm, Easy Mon and Temu-lac at Calumet Farm, and False Lashes is receiving her preparation at the trotting track. Quartered at Keeneland are Syracuse, Hash, Roll and Toss, Third Degree, Atatime, Capulet, Detector, Sir Marlboro, Viscounty, Yale o Nine, Calexico, Total Eclipse, Time-ful, Jay Heart, Joharie, No Competition, On Location, Opelika, Decatur, Rule All, Southland Gem and Sports Writer. Maj. Louie A. Beard, one of the Keeneland stewards, received word from Max Hirsch that Equestrian is training in fine style at Columbia, S. C, and that in the event the son of Equipoise is ready for competition he will be shipped here for his Blue Grass Stakes engagement. t R. S. Byrum, with two, and E. H. Baum-gardner, with one horse, found quarters here. The horses were shipped from Louisville. H. C. "Red" Dodson, agent for the clever apprentice Jack Flinchum, checked in here Wednesday. Flinchum, who rode the first winner of his career at Hot Springs, has been leased to Waldo Freeman for the Keeneland meeting. The veteran rider Herman Schutte joined the jockey colony coming from Louisville. Schutte is under engagement to R. S. Byrrium. Guy Lunsford was a belated arrival from Miami and announced he would take over the book of jockey F. A. Smith, who is under engagement to E. R. Bradley. C. "Tack" Trimpe, young Kentucky docker, came here from his home in Covington, Ky. Apprentice Ernie Hanke, under contract to F. P. Letellier, turned his book over to Lyle Dilger, who made his riding engage ments at New Orleans. Jack Weaver, veteran Kentucky trainer, brought three horses here. They came from Louisville. Goldie Mitchell is making the riding engagements of apprentice W. Yarberry. Tom Sanford brought six horses over from Churchill Downs to carry the colors of J. Graham Browns Brown Hotel Stable. Topped by Don Moss, which was purchased recently from R. L. Stivers, the Keeneland division, also includes Courtesy First, Brown Corner, Ours, Bobs Squad and The Greeter. Check Girl, Comely Miss and Sir Elmer were left at Louisville. Lee ODonnell will introduce James Borup, an 18-year-old boy who comes from Union, Ky., during the early part of the Keeneland meeting. The lad scales at ninety-five pounds and has been galloping horses for j ! two years. f The Fighter and three two-year-olds make up the division of the W. F. Morgan and ; E. E. Fogelson stable which Robert McGar- 1 vey brought over from Louisville. McGarvey intends to van his charges here to fill their engagements. Al Miller, trainer of the I. J. Collins horses, went to E. K. Thomas farm Wednesday to inspect the foal from Miss Lillian. He is by , Bull Dog, and is a half brother to Bernard F., i the star of the Collins stable. Robert McGarvey stated that the firing irons had been applied to Daubers tendons. ; The Preakness Stakes winner is in sound condition, according to McGarvey, and the application was only made to strengthen the 1 muscles. Dauber will, not enter the stud this year.
