BLUE GRASS STAKES FINAL FEATURE AT KEENELAND Six Kentucky Derby Candidates Make Up Field for Headliner Prospects Good for Improvement in Footing by Post Time for Stake Race — Shandon Handicap Attracts Crack Band of Older Horses LEXINGTON, Ky., April 26.— Six three-year-olds, all Kentucky Derby eligibles, compose the overnight field for the Blue Grass Stakes, whose fifteenth running tomorrow will mark the close of the Keeneland Associations most successful meeting. Out of the ,000-added mile and one furlong event will come this sections best prospect for the Churchill Downs classic. Weather and track conditions continued unsettled at Keeneland today, but the chances were fair that the course could be whipped into good shape by post time for the Blue Grass, listed as sixth on an eight-race program. No further rain and plenty of sun tomorrow are the requirements for the track to be dry. The Greentree Stable, of Mrs. Payne Whitney has entered three of the six overnight candidates, with Third Degree as the best of the team. He is due to start, regardless of track conditions, and will have Eddie Arcaro in the saddle. Hash and Roll and Toss are the other representatives of the eastern sportswoman and, whichever of the pair is called upon by trainer John Gaver, he will be handled by Carroll Bierman. Brought here from New York especially for the Blue Grass Stakes by Earl Sande, is John Hay Whitneys Heather Broom, a winner in his only start of the year. Basil James accompanied the colt to ride him. The son of The Porter — Janet Blair shipped in good fashion and he may prove the stumbling block to the powerful Greentree team, although Viscounty, Emerson F. Woodwards Valdina Farms colorbearer, is accorded something of a chance. Charles Kurtsinger has been engaged to ride the colt. CALEXICO OUTSIDER. Charles H. Clearys Calexico completes the field, and he will be the outsider in the wagering. Like the others, he will shoulder 121 pounds, his pilot being Silvio Coucci. The Greentree team is expected to rule at odds-on. With all starting, the Blue Grass Stakes will have a gross value of 0,090, of which the winners net share, excepting Heather Broom, will be ,255. The latter colt can earn only ,590, as he is the lone supplementary nominee at 50, Which is 65 more than was required to keep the other candidates eligible. This will be the third running of the- event at Keeneland, Calumet Farms Bull Lea having beaten Menow in a thrilling race last spring when he established a new track record of 1:49% for the distance. The previous year, Earl Sande sent out Maxwell Howards Fencing to defeat the E. R. Bradley pair of Billionaire and Brooklyn. PAST WINNERS. From 1911 through 1914 and from 1919 through 1926, the Blue Grass was the outstanding spring feature at the old Kentucky Association track, and during its tenure there, was won by such well-known horses as Bubbling Over, Altawood, Bo McMillan, Busy American, Black Servant, Peace Pennant, Regalo, Bronze Wing and Governor Continued on twenty-third page.
