WOOD MEMORIAL WORKS Gilded Knight, Sea Captain and Yoli-tant in Excellent Trials. Brilliant Field for the Renewal — Johnstown, El Chico and Impound Are Certain Starters Saturday. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 26— Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Impound, Wheatley Stables Gilded Knight and Sea Captain, and Saratoga Stables Volitant, were candidates for the Wood Memorial that were shown in useful trials this morning. . Gilded Knight, recent winner of the Chesapeake and which will go to the post coupled with William Woodwards Johnstown, present favorite for the Kentucky Derby, went along for a breezing mile in 1:51 at Aqueduct. The son of Sir Gallahad III.— Gold Brick is thoroughly fit and is holding his edge nicely. Volitant, which failed in the Chesapeake, also was given his trial at Aqueduct, and Jack Goldsborough required more speed when the-son of Display — Flighty Anna went a mile in 1:39%. He was going handily at the end and seems ready for his best. It is not expected that Sea Captain will go to the post, but he is steadily improving, and a breezing mile in 1:47 was all that was asked of him. There was much more interest in the move of Impound. The Vanderbilt colt was worked over the Jamaica course, where the Wood is to be decided Saturday, and, in hand all the way, he went a mile and one furlong in 1:57%. Under restraint throughout, the Sun Beau colt went the first quarter in :26, half in :51, six furlongs in 1:17 and the mile in 1:43%. INTEREST IN IMPOUND. Impound was second to Gilded Knight in the running of the Chesapeake Saturday, beating W. L. Branns Challedon, and he was shipped to Long Island for his Wood engagement the first of the week. This move would indicate that he is holding his form and is sure to give a good account of him-.self in the renewal of the Wood. An eligible for the Kentucky Derby, it has been decided to pass up that prize for the Preakness, to be run a week later at Pimlico. In that "running Impound will again be opposed by Gilded Knight, which took his measure in the Chesapeake, but he will also be opposed by the Wheatley colt Saturday in the Wood. It is possible the brilliant record-making performance of William Woodwards Johnstown at Jamaica Tuesday may make a difference in the size of the Wood field, but Remainder on thirty-first page. WOOD MEMORIAL WORKS Continued from first page. there is still the chance that as many as ten •will be seen under silks. There was bitter disappointment over the showing of George D. Wideners Eight Thirty, even though it was his first race of the season. The race should do the son of Pilate considerable good, but there is some fear that he is not yet entirely ready and he may not be sent to the post. EXPECT BETTER PERFORMANCE. Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Lovely Night qualified in the running, even though beaten so easily by Johnstown. Of course, Gilded Knight will be sent out and Impound will surely go to the post as well as Joe W. Browns T. M. Dorsett. Volitant will be afforded a chance to atone for his failure in the Chesapeake. William Ziegler, Jr.s El Chico is rated among the sure starters, and many expect the son of John P. Grier and La Chica to show to much better advantage than he did the opening day of the season when he was nosed out by Gilded Knight. There is less chance for such as Vera S. Braggs Bostwar, Greentree Stables One by One, Parker Comings Chip In, and E. W. Duffys Chief Onaway going to the post, while John Hay Whitneys Heather Broom, formerly rated as a probable starter, was sent to Keeneland to keep his engagement in the Blue Grass Stakes this afternoon. Thus at this time the probable Wood field is composed of Johnstown, Gilded Knight, El Chico, Impound, Volitant, Lovely Night, T. M. Dorsett, Eight Thirty and possibly One by One. Should it so happen there would be a muddy track for the running, there could come a considerable change in the make-up. of the field, but Fitzsimmons wants a fast track for Johnstown, and it is possible he would not take a chance with the Woodward star in deep going.
