8 j KING RANCH WITHDRAWS j 1 EQUESTRIAN FROM DERBY j FORT WORTH, Texas, April 26.— "Bud" Burmester, well known Texas racing enthusiast, is very sad these days because owner Robert J. Kleberg and trainer Max Hirsch of the King Ranch stable, have decided not to start Equestrian in the Kentucky Derby. "I was sure Equestrian would run a whooping race in the Kentucky Derby," said Burmester, who first learned about horses in Australia, "and I picked him to be not worse than second. El Chico is my choice to win and I like Challedon to be in the money. But Equestrian, hes plenty horse, to my mind. "Equestrian is by Equipoise, one of the best of all time, from the Man o War mare, Frilette, and therefore a half brother to Cravat. He hasnt had very much racing, but youll hear plenty about him before the year is over. Bob Kleberg is one of the best students of breeding lines in the turf world. "It would have been a big boost to Texas racing and breeding if hed won the big stake with Ciencia or Equestrian." Last season Burmester selected Lawrin to win the Derby and is reported to have backed his judgment stoutly in the future books. "Bud" is leaving for Kentucky today to be on hand for the next Derby.
