HORSEMEN PRAISE HOLLYWOOD Consider Track One of the Safest in the United States. Workouts Shifted to Main Track— Training Work Heretofore Confined to Five-Eighths Training Track. INGLEWOOD, Calif., April 26. — Pronounced both "safe and fast" by all the horsemen on the grounds, the mile track at Hollywood Park was thrown open this week for training. An advance guard of over 200 thoroughbreds have already started working out on the course every morning in preparation for the forthcoming forty-three-day summer turf meeting, which begins May 30. Heretofore, training drills had been confined to the new five furlongs training track. The main track was whipped into shape by track superintendent "Bud" Ames, who has had a crew working it over for the past six months. Constant harrowing and watering, besides breaking up the top dressing with tons of straw, has given the racing strip a safe and springy cushion that has met with the approval of every trainer to send out a horse on it. "Ive never seen a track in such perfect condition!" exclaimed T. D. "Pinky" Grimes, conditioner of the formidable L. B. Mayer stable. "You cant even hear a horse run over it, the cushion is so good!" SATISFIED WITH TRACK. Grayson Philpot, trainer of Today and a smart band of two-year-olds for N. S. McCarthy, expressed satisfaction with the track. "Its a well-cushioned strip and should be the same all through the meeting because there will not be any changes in weather conditions." "This track has a natural tendency to harden, but I notice it has been so well loosened up that there is little danger of that," said Pete Pelleteri, trainer of a public stable. | Other trainers to add their words of praise included "Mose" Helm, Hurst Philpot, Dar-rell Cannon, Mickey Tenney, Harry Potter, Al Wilson, A. R. Barnett and Jim Sinott. Fastest mile run at Hollywood Parks inaugural meeting was a 1:38 spin turned in by Bert Baronis No Dice. This mark is expected to be lowered during the first week of the coming meeting, now that the track has had a year to settle into shape.
