IMPRESS IN DERBY WORKOUTS Xalapa Clown and American Byrd Share Churchill Honors. Franzheim Horse Pulls Up Mile in 1:41 — American Byrd Timed Over Same Route in 1:4073. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 26.— The Kentucky Derby nominees which monopolized the spotlight during the training hours at Churchill Downs this morning were Xalapa Clown, the brittle son of Eternal which is to represent the stable of Mrs. Bessie Franzheim, Kentucky and Texas patron, and American Byrd, destined to carry the Derby hopes of William H. Whitehouse of Cincinnati. Both horses have been impressing work watchers with their private trials over the Derby course ever since they arrived on the scene, but todays performances were the best either has shown on the local track. Xalapa Clown, accompanied by Top Man, worked three-quarters of a mile in 1:12%, pulling up the mile in 1:41, while American Byrd, traveling unattended, ran eight furlongs in 1:40%. Both were under hand rides, more or less vigorous, and their efforts were accomplished on a fast track. The Franzheim colt may have sounded a note of warning that he either will have the lead or be fighting for it at some stage of the Derby contest by the fractional time he made in his work. He went the first quarter in :23, and by the time he went three-eighths in :34% he had left his stablemate far behind. He was timed in :46 for the half mile, and :59 flat for the five-eighths. Xalapa Clown and Top Man began their journey from the mile chute and it was not until they were deep in the home stretch that Top Man was able to close the gap which separated him from the Derby horse. By this time Xalapa Clown had gone as far as trainer A. C. Dettwiler had intended to send him and if he appeared to be tiring as he reached the end of a mile, it was only natural, after he displayed such high early speed. DESIRABLE PERFORMANCE. American Byrds performance was all that trainer R. T. Runnels desired and he is becoming increasingly optimistic about the horses chances in the Derby. In his good exhibition this morning the son of Byrd covered the first quarter in :24, half mile in :47%, five-eighths in 1:00% and three-quarters in 1:13%. His mile in 1:40% was as good as any Derby nominee has turned in here this spring. American Byrd, whose races last year suggested that he might develop into a useful three-year-old over distances of ground, won five of seventeen engagements as a juvenile, and among those he was able to beat were Technician and Ciencia, now hailed two of the outstanding three-year-olds of the spring. In commenting on Xalapa Clowns spin this morning trainer Dettwiler said he wanted to see if the colt still had all the speed for which he is noted. Dettwiler pointed out that the colt has had to do much of his training here under adverse weather and track conditions and that until this Remainder on thirty-first page. IMPRESS IN DERBY WORKOUTS Continued from first page. morning he couldnt be sure of his Derby candidates fleetness of foot. The son of Eternal has a troublesome knee and he was "a. trifle lame before he indulged in this mornings spin, but he showed no further signs of favoring the left foreleg after he came out of the trial. A veterinary examined .the colts leg yesterday and it was on his advice that Dettwiler will continue to train him for the Derby, it was learned. While Xalapa Clown and American Byrd were going through their paces at the Downs another Derby possibility was giving a sparkling account of himself at Douglas Park. It was Mrs. Cecil Gregorys Lostagal, which rattled off a good three-quarters in 1:13 after going the quarter in :23%, three-eighths in :35%, half mile in :47 and five-eighths in 1:00%. Lostagal has been training in near-sensational fashion and is commanding more respect daily as a possible Derby starter.
