| Kentucky Derbys of Past — | From 1899 to 1902, Inclusive i ■ ■ ■ - * In previous editions Daily Racing Form has reprinted the charts of the Kentucky Derby beginning with the Lawrin victory in 1938 back to 1919 when Sir Barton surprised the turf world by carrying off the coveted prize as a maiden, never having won a race until that eventful day in May. We believe our readers have found the reproduction of these charts of considerable interest and, but for the increasing number of meetings now under way or about to begin, these tabulations would be continued. However, such is not possible, though a brief summary of the Derbys of the past will be presented if space permits. The fourth group of summaries of the races from 1899 to 1902 are here shown: MANUEL — 1899. The following year the prize again went to the East when Manuel, ridden by Fred Taral, favorite at 11 to 20, won for A. H. and D. H. Morris. Manuel was a son of Bob Miles. The second horse in this race was Corsini, which Ed Corrigan had shipped all the way from California, but T. Burns was not skillful enough to get closer than two lengths to the winner at the end. A summary of the race follows: MANUEL— B. c, by Bob Miles— Espanita, by Alarm 1 CORSINI— B. c, by Riley— Hinda, by Hindoo 2 MAZO — Ch. c, by Rossington — Rena B.f by Ten Broeck 3 Time, 2:12. Hughes, ridden by jockey Bo land and favorite in the betting, had no difficulty in showing his heels to Florizar and Thrive and those behind them in the Derby of 1900. He ran the mile and a quarter in 2:06 1-4, which stood for ten years after that as the record for the race at that distance, the reduction from one mile and a half having been made in Ben Brushs year. Ben Brushs 2:07 3-4 was the fastest previous record. A summary of the race follows: LIEUT. GD3SON— Br. c, by G. W. Johnson —Sophia Hardy, by Glengarry 1 FLORIZAR— B. c, by Florist— Czarina H., by Bob Miles. .. 2 THRIVE— B. c, by Top Gallant— Elmira, by Billet 3 Time, 2:06 1-4. Van Meter and ridden by Jim WinKfieid, the colored jockey, who afterward distinguished himself iv Russia, won the Derby of 1901 quite easily from Will Hayes Sannazarro, piloted by Winnie OConnor.
